Lupin III – Pt 5 #01 — In Need of Technical Support

Did they lose half the storyboards for this episode?

Impressions:

I don't even know where to begin. Apparently this is going to be the season where it's all about hackers and social media and the deep web. And yes, I mean the deep web. Not the dark web. Because they apparently skipped out on actually understanding the difference between those two. And they use "dark web" to refer to a zillion dollar company with a gigantic tower in the middle of a metropolis, so I don't even know what they think they're talking about. Which is pretty indicative of their underestanding of technology as a whole. Lupin puts on Google Glasses and instantly has root access to Silk Road Malco Polo [sic], a bazillion dollar company set up by a single person who also has super root access to literally everything, but is kept imprisoned in a squalid room in the basement. She wants him to steal/free her. So he does. Via just skipping over it. But the real villain is social media. You see, getting a selfie with Lupin is the new hot thing. Because… uh… it just is. Also, Photoshop doesn't exist and nobody would post anything on the internet if it wasn't true.

So, christ. This was godawful in nearly every way. Its ignorance of what it's trying to focus on is galling and takes anybody who has even an iota of knowledge about the internet or social media right the hell out of it, and even if you set all that aside, the supposed central thing about the god wunderkind makes no sense and they skip right the hell over it. They had a harder time making breakfast. I'm also about 90% certain that like last season had Rebecca who took over and crapped on everything, she's here to do the same, although I don't know that there's honestly that much she can ruin that the writing hasn't already beaten her to. If you want to do a heist show, great. I adore the Stainless Steel Rat. I liked Leverage. On a good day, I could tolerate Burn Notice, mainly for Sam Axe. There's plenty of room in a modern setting for Lupin, but this was a pretty goddamned poor go of it.

Not a fan of Lupin becoming Batman/Oracle. Still gonna watch it and hope Epcar’s group dubs this too.
