Basilisk #01 — Work in Progress

January 8th, 2018

Animation to be completed later.

Impressions:

It's been a while since I've seen an episode quite so blatantly unfinished as this one. Over and over again, all animation would completely stop and it'd switch to a sketch in a completely different style, often while people continued to talk over it. Which is a little bizarre, since it was also happy to just sit in its usual style and blather at excessive length. The ending sequence was particularly godawful. Rando spent literally minutes talking about how he has the magical ability to be invincible before being unceremoniously beheaded. Better or worse than the same when discussing the need for incest? Someone else can take a whack at that one.

I suppose the action bit in the middle was alright, if suffering from the same lack of a budget as the rest of the show. Mostly, characters shut up, which was nice because when they started talking about it, everything was back to making no sense. I just saw Rando4 shoot Rando3 in the throat. I guess they were magic bullets. Or a magic throat. Still, that's the only part of the entire episode that wasn't straight up exposition. Shame those characters existed nowhere but that five minute segment. Well, and that it spent about five times as much time discussing the invulnerability of about-to-be-dead people and the perks of incest as it did on advancing whatever the hell the story was supposed to be.

5 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

  • Tiresias says:

The title seems familiar. Is this a remake? Or was there a live-action version before?

    • Aroduc says:

There was an adaptation done by Gonzo a little over a decade ago. This is adapted from the sequel. Technically, one is subtitled “The Kouga Ninja Scrolls” and the other “The Ouka Ninja Scrolls.”

      • Tiresias says:

        Ah, now I remember.

Wait, sequel? Wasn’t the first one a Romeo & Juliet story with so much deaths that both families ceased to exist?

Yes, you care completly right. I’m gonna a SPOILER you a bit so stop Reading now if you don’t want to know
***SPOILER***The premise is somebody resurrected the bodies of the previous main characters, made them fuck and gave birth two kids who inherited their power that are the main characters of this series.

Yes, its as dumb as it sounds, but remember that the author of the first novel died long ago, this is written by someone with the same surname, but is not related to the original author of the original work.

IT’s really bad news when one of the series with one of the greatests starts ever (The ninja battle with the spider and hair guy)runs out of Budget in the very first episode.
A pity, I have a thing for feudal Japan ninja Works since the 80s and we weren’t having much of those lately, and when finally we get one it ends like this.
