Symphogear AXZ #05 — What is Dead May Never Die
July 29th, 2017
Of course they bring him back.
Impressions:
You know who I think would have a goddamned fascinating backstory? Genjuro. Let's see how he became a martial arts badass in charge of a bunch of mewling teenage girls fighting extradimensional aliens. No? We're going to be getting a multi-part inner voyage of Maria and how she was an exploited and experimented-upon child? And bring back Dr. Evil in the process? Good goddamned hell. If we're going to bring back something from the dead, at least let it be Kanade or Pirate Fine. Hell, the 'mom' who died in the second season has hung around thanks to the power of flashbacks more than Kanade has. Bring her back and let her cut a bloody swathe through her old friends for abandoning her. Character arc for at least 2/3 of the main cast right there.
If it wasn't clear by my rambling nonsense, this episode tried hard to out-suck Fate/Apocrypha. It only fell short by having a very brief bit where the C Team fought some noise, and I guess because I spent a while in the first half trying to think of a way to make a comment about how they had a giant picture of a naked guy on screen, and everyone just ignored it. What I wouldn't have given for someone to ask either "Uh, is anybody else wondering where his penis is?" or "Can someone please censor the penis?" or even "Can we get a magnification on the penis?" The dual cliffhangers of "A hydra multi-snake is coming! …And coming… and coming… next week…" and Dr. Evil popping up in dreamland both just pain me. Immensely. The rest of the episode was debriefing, Maria's super ultra generic backstory redux redux, and eating crepes. Terrible crepes.

Was it not foreshadowed in the previous season? When Dr. Evil died, in his last moments he gave a clue to C Team about how to use their powers without magic juice. (It probably has something to do with using tomato juice instead)
