Akashic Records #08 — Good is Stupid

May 23rd, 2017

Although to be fair, everyone in this show is dense enough to bend light.

Impressions:

It's probably wrong to single this show out, especially given the rest of the season, but good bloody god, is every single character here a complete imbecile. Maybe this is why there are so few actual procedurals and no heist shows whatsoever, the level of double or triple think is simply too much. Christ, though. The plan this week is "pretend to be the girl's dead brother, tell her to murder and kidnap her friends," and it goes off without a hitch. They took preparations and knew crazy mages with magic powers were coming with a plot to do the thing, so when a dead person shows up and says "I need you to betray everyone and help me do that thing," of goddamned course we gormlessly hop right on aboard so we can gasp 15 times over. She stabs Whose-Its through the back, and kidnaps the dedicated kidnapping victim so they can go do… whatever with her. I admit that I'm still not even 100% clear on why they're so hot on kidnapping her in the first place. Some kind of… handwavey magic and political reasons. Consequences will be dire… or something.

I kept waiting for some kind of reveal or twist because there's no way they were going to have a character be this stupid and easily manipulated by overtly comically evil dumbasses, but no. That was hoping for waaaaaaaay too much. It's dumbasses all the way down. Well, dumbasses and cackling lunatics, because this is anime, so villains are either tragic explotation victims, cackling lunatics, or The Man. Looking forward to next week when she finds out that the person obviously manipulating her is just manipulating her, and her real friends are the friends she made along the way. At least, I hope. Because if they try to pull some kind of Xanatos plot BS here with how it was all according to some inane plan, then we'll know that the only people the writers think are stupider than their characters is the audience. …That's not actually a bet I'd be willing to take though.

Speaking of stupid things, that kinda explains why the MC didn’t the teach the resident damsel in distress how to defend herself.

Also, did the writers use the name Re=L because of the project Revive Life? Are they going for that “twist” or it’s just a red herring?

  • anise_punter says:

good news everyone there’s still time for rumia to get kidnapped at least once and probably twice more

    • Aroduc says:

Just think, the big arc could be a kidnapping from the kidnapping.

      • anise_punter says:

see, that would actually be moderately clever and require foresight on the part of a third party

  • Haba says:

Literally the worst trash I’ve watched in ages.

    Just stop doing anime Japan.

  • The Phantom says:

Another episode and another Rumia Kidnap and Teacher being beated to almost death. How unique indeed.

  • Germanguy says:

Dragon Quest 237, where you go there and save (again) the Princess out of the Castle
