Taboo Tattoo #06 — Mister Genius

August 8th, 2016

God, I hope that's the last we see of that.

Impressions:

This was a fairly bizarre episode. If this was a light novel adaptation, I'd say that my assumption was that they compressed an entire novel into a single episode, perhaps because they realized that it was pretty stupid and the antagonist is godawful. The end result at any rate is an episode that might almost be a Wikipedia article for the constant stream of exposition. There was some action, but definitely on the low end in quantity and quality for this show. They raided a lab, learned a bunch of random factoids about the magic tattoos which more or less boil down to "this stuff's magic," and Seigi found a mancrush, although from the way he pinned Izzy down, it seems like everyone who runs into him wants him to do them. Also, elsewhere, the princess was having sex with a giant magic crystal while inside it or something.

It wasn't a particularly interesting episode at any rate, largely because it was basically just "random dude drags Seigi along while delivering a constant lecture about being a hero in between info dumps." Personal investment here for anybody was vague at best. Making things worse was the painfully awful mad scientist. What is Japan's obsession with the cackling, contorting lunatic anyway? Because if there's one thing scientists, even mad scientists are known for, it's not their limberness or theatrics. Hopefully it's the last we see of that nonsense at any rate.

Why take the time and effort to paint someone as evil or actual bad news when you can just have them inexplicably cackling, making weird facial expressions out-of-character and wearing a placard that says “Antagonistic!”

  • Neclord X says:

It was just me or they description of “nuisance héro” is exactly what they are? If they tried to differentiate themselves from standard shonen main characters…they failed really bad.
