NEW GAME! #01 — Old Tripe

July 4th, 2016

Totally not a club show.

Impressions:

I deserve a medal for the Herculean effort it took to not doze off. At around the six minute mark, I was already eagerly looking at the clock, wondering when which could come first, the sweet reprieve of death or the first joke. Sadly, twenty two minutes would pass and neither was visited on me. Occasionally, someone would make a face and/or overreact in some way. That's about it for the humor. And the content. Like most of these 4-panel comic adaptation things, there's no cohesion whatsoever. It's just a bunch of banal vignettes with no punchline loosely strung together, and then a weak melodramatic stinger at the end for the greatness of friendship and trying your best to try to end on some kind of insipid life-affirming bit of utter tripe. They spontaneously had a tea party out of nowhere, for god's sake.

It's dull, the characters are trite, the lead is an obnoxious wisp of nothing that exists only to sing the praises of/be in awe of the gloriousness of making not just A Game, and A Game 3. It's the same cloying, unimaginative and uninspired schlock as ever, every single character more perfect than the next and every one of them doing their best for friendship. There are no jokes. There can be no conflict or even slightly compelling drama when the entire cast are sacred goats too perfect to have even humorous flaws. All it can offer at its absolute best is a fleeting smile about girls doing their very best. And it's not even good at that.

Next Episode:

Imagine a character like Michael Scott in a Japanese show. Or Jim and Dwight's relationship. Oh wait.

Or Chris Evans in a bbc motoring show?

Aesthetically pleasing long-haired blondes are enough to make me sit through a show but on their own are not enough to make a show good or even passable.
