Utawarerumono 2 #21 — The Handwringing Olympics

February 27th, 2016

Quick! Leave the battle and do nothing like your lives depend on it!

Impressions:

Hey, let's play the same game as last week. They've finally arrived at the battle, been fighting things, emperor died, so time for things to really kick into high gear, right? Nope! You get a minute or two of CGI goombas running around and the rest is being in transit or talking heads. The only thing that you can even say 'happened' at all is one of the goddamned infinite glut of princesses getting somewhat poisoned and Whose-Its tossed in jail for the crime. That's it. The's the sum and total of the last 18 minutes of the episode after the first 2 minutes was "we have to leave the place where anything might be happening and the character we've been trying to build up for the last month explodes in one grunting blast and will now be transitioning to damsel in distress."

The rest is everyone jacking off to how much this totally matters and is totally really important. How a tertiary character who existed only to deliver the occasional wall of exposition. I've watched shows with less handwringing over killing off protagonists than this has for offing a character who could've been replaced by two or three pieces of paper. Well, I also consider the apparent existence of photographs to stare at wistfully to be something new and different, but I probably just missed that the first time around, although I certainly wouldn't put it past the writers here if they just completely and totally forgot what the setting was.

Next Episode:

Yes. Those are the only three shots in the next episode preview.

4 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

So they are gonna spend at least 1/4 of the episode looking at that cell?

  • anise_punter's elevated blood pressure says:

What if instead of a battle they all decided to play flying circus, a porn game crossover to remember.

Despite the original’s sordid sexing of everything with a tail or wings, this unfortunately isn’t. If it had been, maybe each character would’ve had some kind of damn arc instead of just sitting around like sacks of crap.

this show should get a medal in doing nothing.I expected haku(since I kept expecting him to actually have a central role in the plot)to go to the palace,go to his brothers lab and cure the princess, maybe become emperor too, instead I got lots of stills and the next ep is about rescuing Oshutoru.DO SOMETHING
