Grimgar #01 — Now With Extra Bloom
January 10th, 2016
You can't have fantasy without spending an inordinate amount of time adding bloom to forest backgrounds.
Impressions:
At least it understands the concept of an introductory hook. It's a shame that it had absolutely nothing at all to follow up on it. I would say that it's nice that they're not doing the MMO thing again, except that the amnesiatic bunch of mushheads keep going "Huh? Did I say computer game? Weird. I wonder if those words mean something." How coy of them. Whatever could it mean? Most of the episode was spent on exposition, and more exposition, and the occasional shouting about how this is totally, totally for real serious and not a game. Mostly though, it was exposition. And after that, sitting around, having shenanigans, and announcing their salient traits. But gee, look at those landscapes. Sure haven't seen any bloomy landscapes like that except for all the goddamned time.
It wasn't a strong start then. After the opening squabble, there was about twenty straight minutes of faffing and infodumping. It's not even like those things have to be boring, but there was no humor, wit, urgency, anything to them. Here's a standard fantasy probably-MMO world, let's go ahead and explain every goddamned thing because fantasy is a completely foreign concept to all involved and nothing gets you sucked into a story better than the tedious mundanities of daily life. Hell, they could've expanded on That Guy picking the 'good' team and why they were good and covered even less ground, but more interesting stuff, but instead, they just bounce right over that to whine about being hungry, whose turn it is to cook breakfast, and reiterate for about the fifteenth time how bad at everything they are. Why, Japan?
Next Episode:
More goblins and lazing around.

There may not have been any humour, wit or urgency but it did have boobs and bums. At the end of the day isn’t that what really counts?
Honestly though, those were some nice derrieres.
