Overlord #01 — Close Ups of Skeleton Faces

July 7th, 2015

This is why the directors make the big bucks.

Impressions:

Well, you can’t say that the promo that was nothing but a roll call wasn’t fair warning. I really have to wonder how the staff justifies this kind of thing. “Okay, so, the first episode covers only the two sentence blurb about the show.” “Do we have any interesting characters?” “Maybe later.” “Does anything interesting happen in this episode?” “No, they sit and stare.” “Do we have any character development?” “No, they sit and stare.” “Is there anything visually interesting?” “See the answer to the last two questions.” “So… what is there?” “It’s an MMO, but real.” “…Anything else?” “He squeezes a boob this one time.”

Not to repeat myself from yesterday, but this kind of total lack of any ambition and rote dedication to tired cliches with even the slightest hint of interest from the characters (or staff) is really grating on me lately. The art’s fine looking, I guess I would belligerently say if I was forced to say anything nice at all, and the thirty or so seconds that it bothered to animate were at least devoid of speedlines, but you save a lot of budget by keeping the camera firmly focused on head shots of a skeleton that spends literally the entire episode lounging around while we all get to listen to exposition, so no goddamned points for that.

    The boobs were nice.

    • Aroduc says:

Eh. There’s been plenty nicer. And that don’t have weird spider designs on them.

      • Paulo27 says:

        The dress was pretty sexy.
What I found odd is how you can have anything but pain from a skeleton with pointy fingers grabbing your boobs, actually… that’s not odd at all.
        Guess she’s a masochist too.

  • A.Nagy says:

If only they could animate using the stylized art style of the LN.

This episode basically shows why 1:1 adaptions are bad, and since it’s a different medium you sometimes have to do stuff differently.

    • Di Gi Kazune says:

We all can use Albedo’s threat of cutting off limbs and genitals and feeding them to the directors to prod them in the right direction?

  • The Phantom says:

I would prefer if this was not yet another SAO plot clone, how about making an Anime about the bad guys defeating the good guys? with torture and a lot of blood, and they actually winning in the end?.

About this I need to check what this is about in the next episode so far they have showed nothing about the plot.

    • Raxnom says:

But thats what it is? At least the book is. SAO is nowhere near this in any sense.

    • Anonymous says:

SAO plot existed long before SAO. don’t be that guy who sees something for the first time and thinks everything with the smiler setting is a rip off.

  • algorithm says:

So instead of having an actual demon lord we got a japanese beta virgin pretending to be one? Japan is such a lame country.

Also fuck animation, it’s Madhouse after all.

  • Anonymous says:

yeah the set up took forever. we won’t care about the past but good development could come from a member of a dying game finding peace or something but they won’t even try. I expected a cliffhanger that would tell us they are just a floating island and now have to fight other islands from other games (so that max out MC has a challenge) and he goes to take them all over in the name of good or something. basically anything that would show me where the show is going, is it s a slice of life with a lonely guy chilling with his npc’s pets or what
