God Eater #01 — Shiny Happy People

July 12th, 2015

Yes, everyone takes baths in baby oil.

So much for an exciting start to literally the only full show on Sundays this season. Well, there are things to talk about with the direction, in a number of ways. As I mentioned in the season preview, the style is… a little weird. It almost looks like rotoscoped CGI honestly. People don’t move like the puppets of Sidonia though, so I’m sticking with my assumption that they’re trying to make the regular art/animation look like CGI so that all the CGI  they wanted to use wouldn’t stand out as badly. They don’t exactly succeed on that front. The other thing it absolutely adores doing is the slow mo reaction followed by a zip. It also uses silence surprisingly decently, especially when it comes to having the quiet protagonist stay quiet, even in his head and not fill every available space with blathering or weird music.

That doesn’t change that there just wasn’t much going on in the episode and because of that, it was very dull. He bonked a couple monsters in the holoshed, got bonked back, and that was the entirety of the action before The A*Team showed up at the end. Even they didn’t make themselves very interesting. They’re so cool and in control that they just casually backhand a few monsters as they walk along, leaving the protagonist to summon up his hidden gun transforming powers to actually put in some effort and save Random Woman #74. The end. I feel like we could’ve begun the episode at about the 17 minute mark and missed nothing but some exposition about how it’s magic science and weird shots from the cleavage PoV.
