Gunslinger Stratos #04 — Shower Angst

April 25th, 2015

Did they really need to be naked and in the shower together while arguing?

Impressions:

Well, if she’s going to be dead, at least she took out the alternate Red along with her via the ol’ grenade up the sleeve trick. I’d be happier if there were bodies instead of a spot of scorched ground though, for a couple reasons, which I’ll get to. Still, it gives me hope that the ridiculous Victorian schoolmarm getting gutshot might be more than just a booboo, although no much. Obviously, the one shot and fallen into a lack just has a booboo. It’s still having issues providing some context to the fights though, relying completely on pure exposition and handwaving though. It really needs to give them some kind of actual quest, even if it’s something as simple as “trapped in the other world.” This week’s was “get to the thing first, cause just do it,” with the outcome not coming until next week.

The thing that I found most noteworthy this episode though was probably Pinky and Protagy almost getting all up in sexy times, but unfortunately, that ended up more highlighting that they’re still doing the story with one hand behind their backs. I’d rather see them plunge headfirst a little more into characters in bad situations making emotional (bad) choices and dealing with the consequences and/or fallout from them than waffle about. That would help the violence and deaths too. A nice grisly, upsetting mutilating body evokes a visceral reaction and supports the angst in a way that a silly cauterized wound and piece of charred ground can’t. The action’s been staying pretty solid, so there’s certainly that. Could still stand to get the faces drawn right more often though.

Next Episode:

Not so dead.

What else are they going to do in the shower?

Hey Aroduc, you gonna review 神のラプソディ at a later date?

  • Nazarielle says:

The fights just seem so random and nonsensical. Machine gun bullets stopped by ‘magic’ field, but THIS one goes through it because we needed to kill someone. The fights just have no tension at all, which makes the action (which should be entertaining) one of the most boring parts of the show.

Yeah, I mentioned that last week. They could do without the standing motionlessly and using miniguns to no effect. That’s something the entire season is having problems with, lest we forget BBB’s stare at things and then pose, Mikagura’s Mario Kart battles, UBW’s off-screen/broken up by chattering like squirrels fights, and Seraph’s “let me now explain why that didn’t count” squabbles. It’s weird that Punch Line and Etotama seem to be the two with the firmest grasp on the apparently arcane concept of “two people hit each other.”
