Tokyo Ghoul #13 — Who Are You People?

January 8th, 2015

How long has there been a clown? I mean a fat clown.

Impressions:

Hold on a minute here. Did we just start with a minute of Captain Extraneous riding his bike around, followed by an OP that was just Mister Insecure von Angsty staring at the camera? There have been some weak hooks to this season so far, but this may have taken the cake. And this is for an episode picking up in the middle of the fight that the first season inexplicably cut off in the middle of. That said, I’m not even sure I recognized most of the characters the episode focused on, although it was certainly polite of the evil feral ghouls to wait for them to finish having their chat and then transform. Then they charged straight ahead, totally immune to the attacks they were taking head-on. This would very quickly become a recurring theme of all the action in the episode. Is that a step up or down from when evisceration was walked off but punches were one-hit knockouts? I can no longer tell.

So the writing and directing certainly hasn’t improved. It was probably at its worst when they activated the super-mode of their armor. First they had to announce how it was eating themselves to nobody in particular, then everyone stopped to have study hall for Philosophy 101, in case anybody forgot the battle cry of the first season “Killing is bad.” At least the animation’s still surprisingly good, even if the direction remains fairly crapaholic. Oh, another flurry of punches/shards that a character simply runs/stands through? How exciting. I haven’t suddenly begun liking the characters either, and von Angsty evolving into von Sullen is… Well, actually, I guess I have to say it’s a step up simply because he was such an abhorrent piece of crap before, but I still rolled my eyes and everyone in the show continues to act utterly contrary to sense, so it’s hard to think of them as characters so much as mouthpieces/vehicles for nonsense. I’m pretty sure all he’s going to be continue to do is convert oxygen to angst, just instead of crying in his room about it, he’s going to wear his hair over his eye and insist that everyone call him by his Goth name, Darktormentpainsufferer.

Oh, Thursdays. What the hell am I going to do with you?

“Oh, Thursdays. What the hell am I going to do with you?”
Looking at the past three days, you kinda said the same in regards to them. Glancing at today’s stuff, there’s Isuca, which is LN trash, Death Parade, which isn’t your kind of show, AssClass, which is a noisy JUMP comedy with that one gimmick, Idolmaster, which you will inevitably drop and Jojo, something you won’t even pick up.

Saturdays and Sundays don’t look much better actually. Yatterman looks like something though that you might like.

Well, at least you’ll find more time now translating utterly broken porn games! Ain’t that great?

    • Aroduc says:

      You forget Garo.

And Thursday had as much congealed yuck as Monday through Wednesday combined, although this Saturday and Sunday do have a chance to top that.

But yes, there’s yet to be anything this season to be even remotely excited about.

  • Gambi says:

What the hell … it looks like they are doing a 180° on the mangas story … so what exactly was the point of the break?

  • DoucheBoss says:

Word of God says the anime is following an “alternate” route the manga author planned, but didn’t follow through. Maybe it will still end like the manga did, but who knows, doesn’t mean they can’t fuck it up.

  • The Phantom says:

New main character is worse than last season, action was underwhelming but new cast may make things bloody and I certainly have my love for violence, giving it a few more episodes.
