GARO #16 — Mmmmm… Plague

 Â
Are we still on Namek?
Impressions:
Good god. Have we still not moved on? Exactly how many horrors are in or around the city, exactly? I’m not even really sure I understand what happened with this one. He wanted to be a doctor, then found the guy he wanted to learn from with the plague, so strangled him. Apparently that’s the logical thing to do when you see someone seemingly dead on the ground full of plague. Only after that, the doctor’s book (which was apparently evil, but the doctor kept it for funsies) came to life and possessed him, so he started calling himself the dead guy’s name and alternately healing and eating people. He almost got some points for looking a bit more menacing than past ones, and even had a schtick of healing itself so it wasn’t immediately one-shot. Except that then it went all comic relief in the middle of the fight, and no sooner did it smack German that its OCD took over and it felt the irresistible urge to heal him.Â
It was… not a well-written episode. Even the other side of it with Jimena didn’t really make much sense. She works best in minimal doses, to take in stride or coquettishly harumph at German’s antics. Like every other female in this show, she’s doomed to the sidelines at best, and narratively isn’t set up to serve as anything but a damsel in distress. So why are we having her get all insecure over some perceived misunderstanding which is then just waved off with “Oh, you misunderstood” and that’s that? That was one of the most half-assed restorations of the status quo I’ve ever seen.
Look forward to next week when it’s back to the farm and another sidelines girl!

“Mmmmm… Plague”
Homer would say that.
