Akame #19 — Gun of Plot Convenience

November 9th, 2014

Way to save the day, author interference.

Impressions:

Mine’s weapon’s special power of “Gets stronger based on writer convenience” has always been eye-rollingly awful, but it was in rare form in an episode basically dedicated to her. Not her actually doing or even trying to do anything, obviously. Just the standard “we stumbled over each other and will now kung-fu fight. The stakes have never been… more nonexistent!” It was particularly awful toward the start of the fight when they were in full-on “stand across from each other and shout while firing ineffectually” mode. Good thing she didn’t use the super beam saber from the start. Oh right, she wasn’t in enough threat power level danger yet. And then, because it happens with the inevitability of the tides, we were sucked into a flashback. Can this show have any fight scene at all without some maudlin flashback about being an orphan or having dead friends? At least it wasn’t as long or as maudlin as most have been. Probably because she didn’t end up dying. At least Seryu didn’t get one.

I mentioned it yesterday as well, but the trash talking also leaves a hell of a lot to be desired. At the very least, don’t just repeat what the other person said about killing some of your friends, and if you do, don’t have one side do the whole “Now you’ve gone too far!” schtick. This show is obviously not the height of intelligence, but you’d think they could at least go for some corny one-liners or something to match the ridiculous scowling. Actually, now that I think about it, I’m not sure I remember when the last time we saw anybody do anything actually particularly evil. Corrupt and decadent, sure, but that’s a far cry from the torture and murder that was the starting point back in episode 1. Of course, I can’t really remember much of what the show’s accomplished over the entire run either since the protagonists are pretty much just out to kill the antagonists and vice-versa because… evil or something.

Next Episode:

Back to teleporty guy.
