Akame #17 — Flashback! What a Feeling!

October 26th, 2014

Nothing says moving forward like wallowing.

Half the episode was just a series of unrelated flashbacks; two of them desperate attempts to assure the audience that killing off these characters really does totally matter and it’s such a tragedy that they’re gone. I wouldn’t have seen much difference if the third had been offed too though considering just about all she’s done is eat cookies and go “Sister!” Oh, and I guess summon some punching dummies. Integral character then. Just as much as… every other throwaway jackass who came with his own pack of cronies. That could be unfair. They’re all pretty disposable because they’re all extraneous to just about everything that ever goes on, so maybe it’d be more accurate to say that they’re all of equal worth.

You can certainly kill bit characters and let there be weight to it, but they need to actually be a part of events and clearly important to them and/or the other characters. Your Doctor Whos, Buffies, 24s, Arrows, etc do it all the time. What does this (these) death change or mean for events in motion? Well, first there really aren’t any events in motion so we stumble right out of the box, so it’s not like it represents a main character failing her or being forced to sacrifice her. How does it change things then? Is her death going to mean anything to the survivors? Well, she’s not around any more. Kind of like how she wasn’t around for the last however many episodes it was since she was introduced. Whoopie. Throw a funeral and add a severed head for shock value. Just don’t mess up her hair or it might look bad.

Next Episode:

Nice arms.

Did she need to love the MC as well? There were like 2 lines total about how she now loves him. It added absolutely nothing apart from continuing to show us how Blando the center of the universe.
