Sengoku Basara #26 — Dema Fang

July 5th, 2014

I don’t even know if they just misspelled demon or what.

I don’t know why this took so long to internet itself. It was delayed 15 minutes (as was Barakamon) and airs relatively late compared to most shows, but still. Eesh.

Impressions:

Didn’t most of these characters die at the end of the last series? I guess that’s why they needed a long recap at the start to rewrite history. And then immediately kill Hanbei and Hideyoshi again. So between the decent first season, awful second season, and mediocre movie, where does this fall? Well, with the studio and staff change came a very distinct change in art, animation, and direction. It’s using darker palettes, fewer explosions, and is less comical basically. That’s what really worries me. It’s taking itself completely seriously again and trying to make a grand drama out of itself instead of running with the chaos. Granted, the direction is overall more consistent with that than it was with the second season, but it’s still not what made the first season fun. And fun this badly lacks.

On the other hand, it did put together a pretty decent three minutes of action in the middle which I think I’d be happier about if it wasn’t followed by six minutes of death scenes and plaintive wailing. The action is also very differently handled than it was previously, but I’m not sure how to describe it well. It’s much less over the top, especially Mitsunari’s fight, and there’s this weird kind of dragging blurry thing that they use that makes the animation look jarringly fluid or… well… laggy almost instead of giving the fights a consistent flow. It wasn’t bad necessarily, but it was very different from how Basara fights have been so far.

I guess I’ll give it another episode or two, mostly because everything else today hasn’t even had the three minutes this did, but I’m not eager for another three months of stern looking men angsting it up instead of riding or upside down on motorhorses. It’s like they’re ashamed of having once produced something that didn’t have men crying every episode and now feel the need to overcompensate.

Wait, what the hell? Are they making a Season 3 or is this just filler catch up?

this is completely unrelated to the first anime. it’s a reboot based on the third game.
