World Conquest #06 — New Students, Flashbacks, and Toast

Great.

Impressions:

Yeah. This is the direction I’m sure everyone was hoping it’d move in. Everybody joining the school, infiltrating joining a club, and getting into mischief. I’m so glad that Captain Blando has a secret romantic past with Blondie too. I was feeling like the episode needed more godawful cliches. What worries me is that I suspect once again that it thinks it’s being witty or eviscerating them instead of just throwing them out saying “We know exactly what we’re doing.” Fantastic. You’ve recognized that it’s bad, so why are you doing it anyway? Same goes for the singing/dancing antics. You clearly understand it is stupid. You would not have shown an entire room full of characters looking annoyed if you did not. And yet I’m pretty sure this was supposed to be one of the big ‘payoff’ jokes of the episode.

Being a two part episode instead of the usual episodic affair also meant that everything slowed down to a glacial crawl. The whole first half could have probably been reduced to a minute or two, to say nothing of such compelling parts like the pig squeezing later, which is unfortunately not a euphemism. This arc is likely meant to flesh out Blondie, given the drastic increase in her screentime, but so far, all it’s given is that she was Blando’s childhood friend. At this point in anime, I just assume that everybody is the main character’s childhood friend and they all have amnesia. It’s a depressingly safe bet most of the time.

Next Episode:

Hey! I’m pretty sure that only happened in Final Fantasy VIII
