World Conquest #01 — Small Children on Very Squeaky Bikes

January 11th, 2014

I think they may have overdone it with the squeaking.

Impressions:

Not what I’d call a stellar beginning. Something about the main character giving a female acquaintance a completely blank stare as he narrates to himself “This is X. I know her.” Thanks. This is certainly something I could have never understood if you just said “Hi, X.” Or his need to announce things the things that he sees in front of his face. And reacting to everything that happens with a yelling temper tantrum. Also, I want to take that little front rat-tail hair thing and just rip it off his head, but that’s probably getting a little petty, but with just his shouting and the nasally sound of an adult Japanese female trying to sound like an 8 year old as the main content of the first 14 or so minutes of the episode, I think I’m owed some. It’s not going to go down as one of the shows that A-1 put a lot of effort into.

I guess things picked up a little bit toward the end, but it was still a bit hard to tell what the show was trying to do. There wasn’t anything I could really call action. It was weird and there were some of what passes for jokes toward the start, but I have a hard time trying to think that it was meant to be comic. A lot of it reminds me of this old Softhouse Chara game called Level Justice, where a small girl with sausages for hair led a pack of bored college students, genetic mutants, and tentacle monsters (and yet I don’t think any tentacle rape) against the gestapo military which was being controlled by a team of magical girls. Only that was aware that it was silly and ridiculous (and the protagonist was a mad scientist creating cat girls to then sleep with), while this seems to have locked the writers and artists in entirely different rooms and not let them see what the others were doing.

I guess I’ll give both this and Shinbo another episode or two, mostly because it’s Saturday and what else is there to do? I’m not sold on either though and I’d love for them to pick up the pace and find some way to express themselves besides yelling.

Next Episode:

Sexy men and eyes.

4 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

  • Kitsu says:

Put a bland male mc when you have a badass loli.
You writter know how ruined something

  • Mesousa2877 says:

    Goddamn it, Japan…

The poster for the show made it seem like the loli would be the main character, and I wouldn’t even bother with her monologueing or anything since, well, she’s likely to have to have a notable character.

    Nope.

Now you see why I mostly watch female-heavy shows, since Japan CLEARLY DOESN’T KNOW HOW TO WRITE MALE CHARACTERS IN THE CURRENT ANIME ERA WITH THE EXCEPTION OF SPACE DANDY.

  • Fate says:

This show could be interesting but who knows. Shinbo is a run of the mill harem romance so It isn’t worth watching really.

  • The Phantom says:

Male character is a shameless copy of Natsume Tomoharu from asura cryin.
