Does that really apply when you’re seeing magical worms in your food?

Impressions:

In a world where people can bend the rules of time and space, the main thing they can think to use their powers for is… magic tricks and amusing small children. And occasionally rape. Yeah. I think between the attempted rape and pretending for a moment to bloodily cut a little kid in half, they might have missed the tone a little bit. It’s just as well that they didn’t spend a lot of time trying to explain the magical powers or ghost twins because they seemed to be making it all up completely on the spot. Still, after Yozakura’s verbal spew in place of a fight, it was nice to have a couple people shut up and just use their super powers to beat the hell out of each other a few times.

The direction outside the action was quite a bit weaker though, especially in terms of music which needed to have the volume lowered at least two to three notches. The content, especially toward the end, was also a lot of pretty brainless friendship and “make people happy!” fluff. Likely because there wasn’t really any great focus on anybody but Amane (protagonist), but it was still didn’t really follow from what came before it at all so she might as well have been shouting about the capital gains tax. 

All in all, an okay fluff OVA. It dragged a little in the middle and its tone was a little wonky at times, but mostly competently directed and animated and certainly not cheap. A couple decent but not great action scenes, and an ‘arc’ that would have probably normally taken 3-4 episodes in a regular show condensed down to a far more palatable 25 minutes. Nothing you should go run out and watch, but if you’ve got 25 minutes free and want to switch off your brain for a little bit, it’d be a decent way to pass the time.

The second episode doesn’t have a broadcast date yet, but it’ll probably be in about a month since the Blu-Ray is due out a month after the first episode’s (end of February and end of March).
