Valvrave #09 — Snack Time

June 6th, 2013

Way to be a member of the team, Shouko.

Impressions:

Christ. They’re still harping on about glasses girl? And don’t think the tribute to her including her deep throating something got past me either. At least it’s farly quickly followed by Dumbface being punched in the gut. Not quite sure why being riddled with bullets isn’t enough to stop him, but a solid shot to the breadbasket knocks him out though. Of course, part of the montage that came right after the OP was people praying at a big graveyard. I guess all those other people don’t warrant any angsting. Aaand then Stupidface and his girl wonder both spy on Super Angsty Boy disassembling and reassembling his gun from about two feet away from each other, each having simultaneous snuck up on him, but are shocked to find the other within arm’s reach despite there being nothing between them.

They did mix up the formula slightly this week. The battle started a lot sooner, which Girl Wonder interrupted by serving snacks. The enemy also used the master plan of "draw the super robots away from the thingy," which honestly feels like a step down from magical electric staple boomerangs. But the ‘star’ as it was, of the episode, was angst, and you know how that always makes the bile rise in my gullet. I also feel a little insulted by them pretending like Haruto having super powers and being able to fly a nigh-invulnerable mech are some kind of horrible curse because… he gets sort of bitey when shot or tied up sometimes which has no lasting ill effects? That’s not a curse. Sudden cravings for marmite would be more incapacitating. And more inhuman. Oh, and glasses girl’s ghost continues to live on, moving up from inspiration last week to blocking beams this week. Just in case you were worried that the writers stopped freebasing salvia.

Buuut despite the two new magic robots it’s not enough of a mixup of the formula and still felt rather pedestrian and almost indistinguishable from any of the other episodes of the last month. The action was fine and it remains one of the better animated shows, but the formula is so worn down by now that there’s no weight to it despite weekly cries of desperation that it could all be over this time. And there’s still too many characters thrown up with little attention or purpose. Unlike, say Evol, they’re all off in their own little cubicles and never shall they ever meet… except for goddamned snack time.

“They’re still harping on about glasses girl?”

There are characters who need to die to become relevant. Like half of Naruto’s cast.

Geez, you’d think the Green Hair Guy ™ would care about Glasses Girl ™ in an episode about him getting a robot!
