Working Demon King #01 — Holy Potter

And MgRonald, eh?

Impressions:

Awesome! Another show that begins with CG and an info dump! My two favorite things! Especially when put together! Okay, so it then followed it by some not-bad-at-all fighting animation, but I think that took all the pennies in the piggy bank. The main issue here is that it’s hard to tell what the show is even trying to be. The first 5 minutes are a completely joyless affair and even after that when the ‘comedic’ situation of the powerless overlord and his minion are dumped onto Earth, that doesn’t stop the seemingly neverending torrent of exposition, with only a few breaks every now and then to make a joke. It also went from handling the different language thing a little more gracefully than Gargantia did to completely flubbing it for reasons I can’t really discern. All of a sudden, he’s thinking in Japanese for like… another one of those 30 second spews before screaming in his moonspeak again.

It does get a bit more humor oriented in the later going, but not nearly enough and the visuals do little to nothing to support the humor. Not there’s much there to support anyway, I guess. A lot of the humor falls into the category of just simple overdramatization. The upper level, and I use that term loosely, is about on the level of your nerdy friend waving his hand like a Jedi to open the grocery store’s automatic door. There are a few decent jokes in there, but they’re so slow to come and get no help at all from the director that they’re pretty easy to miss.

I guess it just strikes me as a show trying to do too much and it’s not particularly competent at any facet of it. I’ve seen worse, this season alone, but this was just really incredibly bland.

Next Episode:

35% chance the exposition stops.

Hopefully, this show won’t be all about working and be an employee at some establishment or company.

Working for me is grindfest. Money goes to essentials, anime, and video games. Would be great if God spawns Dragons and magical creatures into real life. ~_~

    Oh, it’s a horror series!

  • Blargle says:

Found the first ep good enough to to stick with it.

Also it is strange that they redrew some of the scenes from the preview, as to me it actually looked like it originally had more budget.

Personally I think of all the attempts at ‘highly dramatic setup for lighthearted show’ I’ve seen this was probably the best.

  • The Phantom says:

This was okish, it was ridiculous enough to be entertaining.

I guess I’ll be the one to say it. This episode was a steaming pile of shit. I really want to shoot the writer for trying to get away with writing such jarring transitions and sloppy character arcs before calling it a day. The demon lord became a completely different character, the underling comic relief gave his role to the demon lord and became forever useless, and the female hero arrived in such a ham-fisted manner that only an idiot wouldn’t be able to predict the next 10 episodes. They should have just cut the first half and left it up to supposition to reveal the past fantasy world, as well as cut out the underling and just outright have the female hero and demon lord be the duo of unrelenting seriousness and comic relief.

Time to get out my 10 bucks because a friend is fuming behind me, challenging me to put money where my mouth is about the 10 episode prediction. Such unrelenting optimism. We’ll see who’s right about what soon enough.
