Sasami Doesn’t Try #12 — Final Fantasy

March 28th, 2013

At least it ended weirdly.

Impressions:

Shouldn’t they have kicked these events off like… two or three episodes ago? They also apparently didn’t have much budget left for the flashy action as Kagami vs the fox lasted about 10 seconds. Oh well. A stronger ending than I was expecting from the show. If this wasn’t the last episode and everything the usual kind of inane nonsensical nonsense thrown in out of literally nowhere and then turned into a joke partway through it, I’d even say it was a pretty good episode.

But everything they did in the first half just ended up being a "ha ha, all according to plan", or maybe even worse, a big joke. They went from Edogawa chewing on Tama’s neck, stabbing her, yanking out her heart, and her bloodied corpse lying on the ground straight to… a corny RPG parody. Did the budget just completely run out there? Did her (their?) brother’s secret identity moonlighting as Susanoo a Final Fantasy character make Shinbo think this was a good idea? Who even knows.

Final Thoughts:

It began by alternating each episode between flashy yet incomprehensible, and cheap, cheap info dumps. Around halfway through when it introduced her dead mother, it threatened to pick up a little bit, find some direction for events to go in, etc… but within a couple episodes, that was resolved, and then not only were the seeming sacrifices completely reset immediately after that, but said antagonist was just straight up rewritten and the show proceeded to literally just stop. The last month is practically just time wasting filler. Multiple episodes about going on vacation, taking baths, and being super besties. I need to stop saying that.

It had a few moments, mostly of the eye candy variety, but neither the characters nor the plot could support the sheer amount of weight all the exposition dumped on them leaving a lot of the writing just excessively complex nonsense thrown out there with the hope that something would stick. Complexity is not depth, and this show sure as hell did not need all the infodumps it had for how little was actually going on or how much they then glossed over it when it did.

If it had stuck to the craziness, budgeted itself a little better or at least more consistently, and didn’t have about five or six episodes of just empty space, it’d probably be worth watching. Maybe it still is if you want to take a few minutes to glance at the cliff’s notes and skip the many episodes where everyone completely phoned it in.
