Vividred Operation #01 — And Then It Was a Magical Girl Show
January 10th, 2013
Complete with talking animal.
Impressions:
So apparently we’re going full-on magical girl here, complete with talking magic science stuffed animal mascot and transformation sequences resulting in frilly skirts. I’d be rolling my eyes more about that, but it was easily the most interesting part of the episode. All the rest could have been (and may have been for all I know) cut and pasted straight from Strike Witches, Lagrange, or probably a half dozen other shows, seasoned with a small helping of Eccentric-Old-man-From-A-Children’s-Mecha-Show-Who-Built-A-Super-Weapon-In-His-Basement. All that was missing was the actual monster for her to fight, because apparently we wouldn’t want to move too fast as to have a magical girl actually do anything in the first episode. Lord knows that nobody can follow the intricate plots of things like PreCure because it goes way too quickly.
Production’s fine. Very middle of the road in just about all accounts. Thankfully, most of the proctologist-lens camera shots were the ones already shown off in the promos and were mostly clustered at the start, but trailed off. Again though, most of the first 15 minutes was just kind of dull buzzing, random flashbacks, and "Look how spunky our lead is!" Which makes a lot more sense framed as a rather generic magical girl show, I suppose, but that part wasn’t obvious until she started transforming.
Anyway, not a great start, not horrible. I’ll definitely tune in next week at least long enough to see what kind of weaponry she’s toting. The utter lack of anything in the preview, and A-1’s tendency to blow budget in the first episode, kind of worries me though as there wasn’t a whole lot interesting going on besides the stuff at the very end.

Where’d all the guns go?

But will she sing while fighting the aliens? That’s the important question.
