Sakurasou’s Pet Girl #01 — Butts in Faces

October 8th, 2012

What is Japanese sex ed like that instills such a fear of female genitalia into these people?

Impressions:

Not too horrible a start for a comedy in a season without very many. It is a fairly generic episode though, even if decently executed. It does very frequently skirt the line between simply energetic and obnoxious, especially with the protagonist and the obligatory ditzy over-energetic girl. There was literally a bit of her watching an ‘anime’ that was just like… 20 seconds of flashing lights, Photoshop filters, and her screaming. If there was a joke in there, it was lost under the sensory assault. Our protagonist also could’ve used more slapping the girl in the head with her underwear and less screaming about the horrors of seeing breasts and/or a vagina.

Like practically always, it needs to cut the internal monologuing and overreacting to everything by about 90%, if not more. The production and direction especially were frequently more than good enough to carry many of the scenes, both comedically and otherwise without anybody narrating over them or surprise CG train smash cut. Not that either will win any awards, but the direction did do a good job of covering up/masking a lot of the cheaper bits. Good enough to earn it a second look next week at least, although it really needs to find a better way to direct its energy besides volume. Sometimes they manage it, mostly by using background characters reacting to signal punchlines. Most of the time though… the old standby of yelling at the top of one’s lungs. Annoying.

I kinda liked this, nothing special but also nothing wrong with it which is a plus, It had some fanservice which is unavoidable nowadays but nothing intolerable.
