The Ambition of Oda Nobuna #02 — Fan Boys

July 15th, 2012

That wasn’t much of a struggle.

Impressions:

Not nearly as fast as last week, although all of Not-Hideyoshi’s (as I’ve already forgotten his real name) random antics with his literal herd of little girls gets tiresome quickly. Yes, yes. You are yelling because things are not as you expected. Another hilarious slice of Japanese humor. The whole globe fondling bit (which is unfortunately not a euphemism) was also more than a little corny. Nobuna herself is also a bit too hormonal and/or swinging between various emotions entirely too quickly and without enough reason, right from practically mounting him to threatening to kill him, both for not particularly well understood reasons.

The main ‘plot’ of the episode, to be generous, was involving Nobukatsu (better known as Nobuyuki) and the half-hearted family struggle that was treated like a big joke right until it became time to behead people, and then it’s all serious. Then Not-Hideyoshi stopped her from being all Demon Kingy and yada yada okay whatever. With relatively little focus on Nobuna and her acting completely differently every single time that the scene cuts away from her, it’s a little hard to take these ‘touching’ moments seriously. The show could stand to drill down and focus on characters within the historical events a whole lot better. Almost the entire first half could’ve been better spent on Nobuyuki and Nobunaga to give that… well… just about anything more. Or at least not just a bunch of guys cheering Nobuna’s name.

Huh? 2 eps in and the romance is already so obvious? Something’s wrong here…

I still have no idea about Nobukatsu’s gender =/

  • Neclord X says:

This episode was so exciting I almost hit the forehead on the desk falling asleep.

  • anon says:

Complaining because Nobuna is not a one-dimensional character that fits into an archetype? Her mood swings are realistic that’s how people really are. It isn’t too hard to understand either, you’re exaggerating. She is really a nice girl with huge ambition in private but she has to be harsh and serious in public which is why she changes personality every few scenes; really an easy concept to grasp don’t blame the writing for not spoon feeding you. If anything that’s a huge plus in technical writing, much better than a tsundere character who is always tsundere.

    • Travis says:

This explains so much. I can’t believe I haven’t been looking at shows from the perspective of technical writing before; the statistical skill it takes to tell instead of show has left me in awe of the realistic depiction of the Sengoku Era.

… On that note, why don’t they ever make a show where Nobunaga’s victory at Enryaku-ji is displayed in a positive, or at least pragmatic light? Even being portrayed as a human villain instead of some shadowy demon thing would be a step up. Also, I literally cannot watch this because Alternate!Monkey grates on me like a cheese grater on cheese.
