Place to Place #01 — “Glasses are the Main Unit”

April 5th, 2012

I haven’t even the foggiest idea what that’s supposed to mean.

The biggest issue here is that you can feel the brackets of original 4 panel comic locking down over every. single. joke. Scene cut -> Setup -> Remark -> Joke and audio stinger. Every. Single. Time. Hell, the only difference between the preview for the next episode and the rest of the show is that the preview wasn’t animated or colored. Well, it’s also not helped by the jokes not being very good. Tsumiki’s catness helps sell a fair number of them, but most punchlines are still just the usual screamed "THAT IS NOT WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT!" The ones that weren’t were usually pointing out the obvious, like "They’re being soooooo lovey dovey." Thanks for ruining the moment, jerks.

The show’s general energy also needs to be badly evened out. The sedate music in particular, like almost every eastern show, is rather unfortunately just plopped down and left to run with little regard for making it actually fit scenes. It’s not bad by any means, but it clashes with the humor instead of supporting it, especially given that characters have only two levels of energy; stoned off their gills, and screaming like someone just stabbed a fork into their bathing suit area. Production’s fine otherwise, and Tsumiki is certainly usually cute. Not enough to carry the show on her own though. Io has even less of a personality than the guy whose name I never learned in Sencolle and may never appear again. The rest of the cast veers more towards the yelly variety and could only be made more annoying if they were autotuned.

So *shrug*. It’s frequently cute, but there’s not a whole lot distinguishing about this episode besides that. I am happy that it didn’t sit down and explain every character, their pasts, their relationships, etc etc, but what it did do in its place wasn’t that interesting either. Basically, it could’ve been a whole lot worse, but it definitely wasn’t a great comedy either.

3 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

  • GF202020 says:

I say stick with it only because one of the main characters has covered odangos.

…that needs to occur more often.

is that konata from lucky star?

  • Nanaya says:

What is with all the cat comparisons in anime? Is it a cultural facination? Is it a subcultural thing? Is it just a very specific niche that only exists in anime and just seems pronounced because of that?

…Actually, now that I think about it I’m not really sure if I want to know that answer. Some things are better left untouched.
