♫ Twilight, I Only Meant to Stay Awhile ♫

April 1st, 2012

It’s deep because it’s prog rock.

Thus I continue my lonely annual war against April 1st and the stupidity that engulfs the internet for an unfortunate 48 hour ‘day’ by simultaneously celebrating the site’s not-actual-birthday and attempting to do something productive. My speech is "It’s been another year. Way too many bad shows watched. Four more games translated. Kamidori will probably unfortunately overshadow everything else I even think about doing from now on." Now get me a drink. Which brings us to this year’s temporary fit of productivity.

One hundred years from now, mankind will have developed the Matrix and for some reason, when things go horribly horribly wrong in it, the only people they can find to send to check things out and make it stop killing people are a bunch of teenage twins.

It’s not much of a premise, but TWIlight INSanity is a shmup, so the standards for the writing ain’t Hemmingway. Although it sure does try by length. The scripts about six times longer than I expected, chalking in at a little over 6k lines (although there is a fair bit of repetition besides just thematic). I’m not really sure why it’s that long since many of the alternate versions of stages just differ in what the characters chat about and their banter with the bosses. I also find it quite amusing that the A endings (for poor play/choices) are all happier than the B endings. The C (true) endings can also be pretty funny when compared to each other for the sheer amount of schizophrenia between them. And just for the record, Alto is the best boss in both smack talk and theme. Sara gets an easy second place for the crazy.

But to be honest, TWINS is still pretty ghetto-doujin. AQLoop still hadn’t quite figured out game design when they made it. TWilight refrAIN and Alternative Sphere are the two of their games that I really like, but TWINS was made on the same engine as them and AltS is part of the same timeline (occurs a few years earlier and involves one of the character pairs of TWINS). It’s not bad by any means, but everything about the other two is a few tiers better; mechanics, art, enemy design, aesthetics, you name it. I will get to them eventually (unless someone else wants to work on them instead, which would be fine by me), but something else has come up for now that I’d rather work on which is probably going to distract me and make progress with them sporadic at best. Over the next few months though. Hopefully.

Anyway. Enjoy. Or don’t. Whichever.

First of all, thanks a lot for the translation, I’m having quite a blast playing this game. I really hope the other games are getting translated sometimes in the future. Saying that they are even better really gets my hopes up. But for now I’m still going on trying to get all of them endings…
