Saint Seiya Ω #01 — Equip Horse For +95 Shininess

March 31st, 2012

There’s something slightly disturbing about that.

Accel World’s first two episodes were webcast as a pre-air special this evening too. I’m getting there, I’m getting there. Space Bros actually broadcast too. Busy evening somehow…

Impressions:

"Geez, it’s not like I want to protect you. Wait, you’re infected with space?! And here’s a guy made out of space in a bitchin’ cape come to kidnap you!? I do want to protect you! I’ve been honest with my feelings! My true power is unleashed! COSMO HOOOOOOOO! And now I will wear this horse."

Man, it’s fun just writing about this show. Or maybe it’s because I was eating dinner during it, so now I’m full and satiated. But it’s probably because I expected very little from it and can thus approach it with all sarcasm circuits on full automatic. It hasn’t lost the 80s aesthetic either, although to its credit, it had more (and better!) fights in its first five minutes than this last season of Shana had in its first month. Sure, that does mean that the character art also tends to be very simplistic too with some particularly strange angles and backgrounds that make no sense… not to mention occasionally forgetting to draw the 10 foot golden wings on at least one occasion, but I think that’s part of Saint Seiya’s whole Saint Seiyaness. I have no idea though. When they start rambling about Cosmo Power and someone reveals that they’re infected with Deadly Space, they may as well be midichlorians and tachyon field coil inductors. I’m sure existing fans of the 30 year franchise will be able to follow along better than I.

Regardless, it’s exactly what you’d think in all its cheesy 80s glory. Maybe it’s a little better than I expected from my zero previous experience with Saint Seiya thanks to having someone other than the cheapasses at Pierrot handling a Jump show, but it’s still got the depth of a puddle with characters whose sole purpose in life is to get stronger so they can… uh… protect stuff and junk… using the magical power that was within them all along. Also buy our new limited edition Kouga action figures. Now with extra horse power.

    Hey
It’s the same formula: girls ornament and rescued by the man Knight.
This athena will beat the previous record being rescued more times?

  • Ryugan says:

wait……now the armors the cool amors in boxes are now magical girl pendants? ………oh god

  • AGear2Ax says:

Mahou Sentai Saint Seiya! I pass!

  • The Phantom says:

LOL at magical girl saint seiya, this is like a Saint Seiya “for kids”, I already watched the original series so there is no reason to watch this inferior wannabe.

  • Wilfriback says:

This has more action that 20 episodes of the original series, and I’m fine with that. And since Umakoshi is involved on this Koga can end growing like his other characters.

2000 and still carrying a metal box?

    *Facepalm*

It was nice seeing Shaina beating up the protagonist in the first episode again.

The manga was great but the old anime was awful.
