Sure you didn’t mean Disco Inferno?

Impressions:

I think I’m cutting my losses here given that the next episode will be yet more of "Madoka’s Happy Fun Time Parade… PLUS FLASHBACKS," and you know how I love hi-larious jokes about eels being slippery on a girl’s skin flashbacks. As big a fan of watching random sparklies rain down for minutes, that terrible ending made me realize that I would love nothing more than if Madoka’s stupidity completely blew up in her face and taught her not to stomp around like a spoiled little child all the time. Yes, I know the big bad man was such a meanie to your friend. No, I’m not buying that as the suddenly all-important motivation that makes you want to immediately go fight the people who attacked your city.

Everything I said last week (and most before that) still applies. There’s this massive gulf between half the show trying to be serious and the main characters having absolutely no idea about that. They’re trying to have it both ways with a meaningful plot and Madoka et al going on nothing but The Power of Friendshiptm, with the only thing connecting the two being the serious side doing awkward jokes. What was an ostensibly serious scene falls subordinate to Madoka rushing in to draw circles in the air and/or Lan barking. Muginami is somehow the only one with even the slightest bit of situational awareness… or depth for that matter. Her self-destructive explosion at the end would’ve been much better if it wasn’t followed up immediately by Madoka literally exploding in a shower of sparklies that just went on and on. The fluff was easier to ignore in the earlier episodes because they were full of… not great, but certainly watchable… action. Since episode 3 though, this is the closest they’ve come to another fight, and it was just Madoka hitting immobile robots for a minute or two and Villa firing a gun. Thrilling.

Preview:

Flashbacks and eels.

    wait, you didn’t realized that the show is about cute girls doing cute things and friendship between girls (read as yuri)

  • AGear2Ax says:

    Where do I sign up to the main event of Madoka being utterly in despair when she realizes that she has been helping the bad guys all the time and the one he wants to punch the most is actually a good guy?

    BTW, she exploded in a shower of sparkly flowers not just sparklies :P

  • Progeusz says:

    Wow, way to fail at understanding the show. It’s not trying to be serious. It’s just random mecha with cute girls instead of whiny fags. It’s pretty and Madoka is the best main character this season so I’m pleased with Rinne.
    It’s like people shouting the K-ON!’s bad because it’s not deep. Jeez, I would expect more from someone who has blog about new anime.

    @Progeusz

    I think you should read the review again before venting my mucker.

    Personally, I was very entertained by Evil Bishie #3’s reaction to earthling energy drinks.

    I’m sorry, but it’s exactly as Aeroduc says. The tone does go back and forth, and it’s up to the viewer whether this comes off as annoying or attractive.

    I don’t think it’s a problem.
