Symphogear #02 — Truly Outrageous

January 13th, 2012

Truly truly truly outrageous.

Impressions:

Certainly not as strong as the first episode, but I had to laugh at the opening segment of Hibiki trying to sing her own insert song. It was so very very 80s. Aah, the 80s. When MTV was relevant and wild pop bands roamed around from station to station, having entire cartoon built around them. Who can forget Kidd Video, or Jem? The answer as it turns out, is most people, so I forget what my point originally was. It was kind of annoying/dumb of them to completely drop the whole berserker thing for Hibiki’s transformation though. That would have been far more exciting. After that and Tsubasa apparently wanting to fight Hibiki at the end of this episode ("Let’s fight together!" "Yeah, let’s do that." "SEMANTICS! You’ve betrayed me again!") maybe the show is just going to toss around cliffhangers the way that Guilty Crown uses Shu crying. Maybe it’ll at least make her stop PMSing so hard. Yes, a piece of your dead friend is literally inside the new girl. Stop crying in the shower and try to fondle it out of her or something.

Anyway, it was still a decent episode although the middle kind of dragged a bit. After Shana though, I get the feeling that my standards are shot for a good hour or two. I still like the music for the most part, even if at least 45% of that is enjoying the cheese factor. Most of the episode that didn’t involve the noise was pretty evenly split between exposition about Hibiki’s new job/powers and lesbian snuggling. You cannot tell me that’s heterosexual snuggling either, especially when they start blushing and talking about how warm each other’s bodies are. In anime lesbianism, that’s at least 2nd base, right ahead of fondling hair and behind smelling each other.

I’m still trying to figure out why the guy tucks his tie into his breast pocket though. Between that and the beehive hairdo, future fashion confuses me.

    “future fashion confuses me.”

Would you rather they dressed as Macademi’s Hapxier?

*just watched it last week for the first time**
**still utterly horrified by that dude***
    ***WHY DIDN’T ANYONE WARN ME?!

This show seems to have an idea of where it’s headed, at least. Helps that it’s an original production and not an adaptation of some shitty LN.

Kind of a slow episode, but alarms always help with that. Fights weren’t as cool as in episode 1 but eh.

If they can manage to keep it actually focused on something it should be pretty good I think. Having the Wild ARMs guy doing scripts means there’s some serious potential for crazy cool stuff later on too.

Thanks for the video. So yes, Ao-chan sang here.

Truly, Truly Truly Outrageous! :D, well the insert song worked nice, and this episode was alright.

I guess Tsubasa got her angst on! Angsty Nana Mizuki is angsty!
