Last Exile – Fam The Silver Wing #01 — Lessons Learned

October 14th, 2011

You may want to take another swing at that, Gonzo.

Impressions:

So, Gonzo… What are you bringing to the table? This opens with the lead character stripping down to nothing but her poofy underwear and garters as she comically sleepwalks off the ship. And then the OP begins with the female cast naked and splashing around in water …And when she’s flying, she puts on headphones with cat ears. …I think I see just what lesson we took out of your last successful solo show, Strike Witches. And of course, just to recapture their former glory, Dio’s back from the grave and shouting IMMELMANN TURN. "Remember that!? Remember when you liked us!? We remember!!" Maybe we should… you know… tone it down a little, Gonzo.

Production was… average I guess. It’s hard to feel much of anything about CG that looks like barely better… if not worse at times… than an Ace Combat game from five years ago, and that was clearly supposed to be the exciting part. It never meshes with the actual animation well either, but that’s nothing new. Mostly though it looks like they spent more time focusing on modeling the giant warships that just sit there like bricks than caring about doing anything interesting with them. Yes. I see them. They’re very… brickish. I don’t need to watch them slowly drift around in the sky multiple times. Along those lines, the direction was exceedingly suspect during a lot of those ‘dramatic’ moments too. For example, I have no idea why the camera was upside down when the ship was pointed straight up. And more confusingly, at one point, a princess was holding her dress down from flipping around and blowing in the wind (indoors remember) while she was on her feet just fine… as if gravity was affecting her dress and the camera, but absolutely nothing else in the room… and there was a stiff wind suddenly blowing. I think the director was high.

So… meh. It’s not insultingly bad like some shows this season have been, but it does absolutely reek of Gonzo just taking Last Exile and soullessly reworking it to focus on a bunch of silly cute girls. I didn’t even like the original Last Exile much in the first place, and another version with a super extra helping of pandering? Yeah… this isn’t going to happen. Good luck there, Gonzo.

More slowly moving airships.

    Immelmann Turn!!!!

Oh god, please no! Not again! :(

  • Nan says:

It’s a pity, I liked the original Last Exile. It was one of the first series I saw (back on techtv or whatever it was called), and was also one of the series that kept me from slipping into nippon!banzai sub>dub-ism.

I wish that they could just let finished series stay untouched… whats next, cowboy bebop s2? Ugh.

    • 10krad says:

that’s probably why there had been a lot of changes, like thhe main characters and such. and if you point out that Dio was in there, sure he’s in there and that’s a great plus

  • Anon says:

I dont think many people liked Gonzo when Strike Witches aired and that answers the question of what next … Strike Witches II.

Also I guess this is this season Yuri series.

  • Embok says:

Last Exile was about as interesting as an old UC series. I figure pandering with lesbians will make it at least somewhat entertaining this time around.

  • Anonymous says:

I’m not very sure why, but the character design looks a it inferior than the original. Except maybe Dio, who looks the same.

    I did like the original.
Just hope they don’t tottaly screw it

    geniual

  • Ransom says:

When I read the the story was going to be mostly about a group of “girls” instead of a mixed cast like in the original, I knew this was going to be cr@p…

  • zaeris says:

lol, why do you even bother writing review when you never had any intention of writing a proper one.

  • Anonymous says:

They’re turning last exile into strike witches? Last Exile was one of the few shows I could respect Gonzo for, and now they’re just shitting all over that respect.

Why did Gonzo have to come back from the grave?

  • Travis says:

Forgive me if I break my rugged exterior and weep. Just a bit.

The original wasn’t great or anything, but by gum I really liked it.

    Just… Why.

  • Kunagisa says:

Oy oy, so many naysayers here.

The fanservice is so minimal that you can’t really call it fanservice. Honestly, the whole music and BGM department still have all the Last Exile feel. If you guys never love the original Last Exile of course you aren’t going to “feel” this one. Besides, some of the frames are completely gorgeous. From the concept art to the presentation I think they did a fine job.

  • xzander says:

Such sour grapes, it’s a first episode. Let’s watch how it plays out in the coming ones. It wasn’t such a bad first episode. And if you didn’t like the first season, why covering the second one?

  • The Phantom says:

    bha, RIP Gonzo.
