Everything’s Better With CG!

October 29th, 2011

Oh goodie. A CG model dancing around for while the camera shakes with explosions for a whole 45 seconds. Maybe if there was an actual fight here and not just one CG thingy hopping around amid generic things going boom. And the rest of the episode was the same as always. This began with almost ten minutes of Iskander ranting off-screen because lord knows, actually bothering to animate him for that long would have been hard on the budget. Almost everything that actually moved this week was CG. Gil throws CG swords at CG Lancelot, CG Lancelot swings a CG pipe at Saber, Iskander uses his CG chariot to trample CG Lancelot and Kariya suffers from more CG worms. Stellar. At least they laid off the distance shots this week, although with this much obtrusive CG, they may as well be Gonzo.

Hey Aroduc! See the good side of things… First there’s no flashbacks! and Second, at least CG Lancelot didn’t say a single word…

    • Aroduc says:

Yeah yeah. Things did actually move in the second half of the episode, unlike the off-screen first half, but it was almost all in the direction of “let’s go back to standing around talking” with Lancer getting ordered to attack then going home about 90 seconds later being the biggest abuser of that. I still have a policy of not being impressed by anything that does not look significantly better than video game CG from multiple years ago.

Lancer getting ordered to attack, then backing down shortly later, happens in the source. I understand being angry about it, but it was going to happen even if this was the best adaptation ever created in anime.

CG was fine enough (at least far better than Tiger and Bunny ones) so I don’t get your complains, really.

  • ChocoBar says:

Complaining about the CG in Fate/Zero and yet praising the action scenes in Horizon…wow Aroduc can you get more condensing?

    >The same team behind the KnK movies is working on Fate/Zero
    >Complains about the use of CG

    Derp!

  • seibaru says:

Condensed to the point that your eyes are squinting enough to mistake ufotable’s well done CG, as amateur photoshop lens flare filters.

  • icymirage says:

Are we discussing how small of a box we can pack Aroduc into or is there some meaning of “condensed” I’m not aware of?

I don’t mind the CG (I thought it was well-done), but the fight was really random, and they still could not fight for more than a few minutes without having to break for teatime (some master needs to hire to a real servant to serve tea).

Dude, considering how much better Gate of Babylon looks in Fate/Zero than it does in Unlimited Blade Works, I’m not going to complain about CG. At least ufotable didn’t rip off Yoku Wakaru Gendai Mahou’s CG like DEEN did.

  • Kusano says:

Holy Shit, Berserker is so fucking badass.

  • Athos says:

Too shallow. If you can’t be bothered to weigh the merits as well as the flaws, you make it look as bad as the episodes that actually deserve the bashing.

Then again, I just want to be entertained. As long as you can manage to make me laugh, you get to complain as much as you want.

  • Anonymous says:

You hate CG so much you didn’t realize Berserker is CG in the OP too? Makes me wonder when you think anime looks good, since you also complain about shows with fluid animation because that’s ugly or something.

  • FlameStrike says:

Haha, Aruduc is just being Aruduc. If it’s something he likes, he’ll praise it. If it’s something he doesn’t like (such as any kind of CG), then he’ll blast it down so hard. I don’t really remember a time when he took a neutral opinion like “Hmm X was good but Y was bad.” But that’s part of why coming here is fun.

Aruduc may have seen CG, but all I saw was the awesome black knight kicking ass and being GAR, knocking some arrogant King of Heroes down to size. I have no problems with CG’s. In fact, Berserker being CG actually seemed to make him more surreal to portray the effects of his illusion NP. Compared to other anime, UFO table’s CG was very well integrated. Aruduc made a comment about how anything less than video game CG Advent Children style is unacceptable. Well I hate to break it to him but that’s just not realistic on an anime budget. Maybe if anime animators actually got paid any decent wages.. ah well that’s another topic entirely that I don’t want to get into.

I also like the attention to details in areas like Gilgamesh’s Gate of Babylon. Each weapon was unique and epic looking, befitting of Noble Phantasms. They also counted the right amount of weapons thrown (16) and matched each shape shown in the back of the Gate. If you compare it with DEEN’s disgusting magically make every weapon in GoB turn into a yellow pew pew laser and fly at the enemy… It’s a universe of difference to me. They also did justice to the raw power of GoB. Every other sword in there is a Noble Phantasm with the explosive power of a bomb, but in the F/sn anime they were all turned into generic weak little pot shots. UFOtable has fixed this great wrong.
