Sengoku Maidens #13 — Back To The Future

June 27th, 2011

Creative titles are for chumps.

Impressions:

No real surprises here, unless you count the lack of a celebratory orgy. Well, one surprise is that Hideyoshi’s hair is huge. I refuse to believe that she’s able to pack all of that into those little dumplings. She’s a goddamned wizard. I really could have done without the terrible song at the end though. Ow. My ears. Well, and that the dog is apparently a time traveler. I’m still not clear on why there’s a talking dog with Masamune’s helmet in the first place. And now it travels through time.

Date runs off to take the armor, Nobunaga cuts it in half saying nobody needs that power, every goes back to their right times, Mitsuhide gets called a tsundere again, Date tells her the best way to please a warlord. Same old, same old. They’ve also probably screwed up history more than one can imagine just to save Date from… whatever. I’m still not sure what the problem was. Half these characters are supposed to be dead at this point and Hideyoshi’s supposed to conquer Japan. Maybe that history book Hideyoshi keeps forgetting to look things up in is less accurate than I was assuming.

Final thoughts at the bottom.

Final Thoughts:

Well, it existed. It was harmlessly dumb, and while it flirted with being something better than that a few times, that’s really about all it ever was. I think most of my enjoyment came from making lesbian innuendos and noting the historical battles it bastardized, but that’s it. Still puts it above TWGOK, so I don’t regret it over that, but eh. It held its overall plot and characters together a little bit better than certain other "stupid" shows I could name this season, but only by being really unambitious with any part of its structure or production. When you aim low, there’s not far to fall.

In the end, there’s just nothing notable or significant about it at all. You can get 75% of the experience of the show in 30 seconds just by browsing through some character art. It’s kind of amusing for transforming some historical battles into public lesbian cuddlefests, but that’s about it. I doubt anybody will remember it at all within a couple weeks, and that’s probably about what it deserves.

“GREAT SCOTT, MARTY! The space-time influx has been damaged beyond repair by a small Japanese girl! To the DeLorean!

  • Jack says:

Not a bad ending. Not a great one either. Out of the “travel to a different world” shows that I watched this season, this was probably the least worst ending with “Dog Days” next and “Astarotte’s Toy” being lamest … which is too bad because “Astarotte’s Toy” was the better show of the three.

Ah well…on to the next season…
