Softenni #03 — Sharks From The Sky

Sharks make everything better.

Impressions:

Back to being hilarious and full of energy, visual and otherwise, thankfully. Asuna and Misshi remain the weak links in the chain. She’s not too bad as a straight man to the others, but her fanservice delusions remain the weakest jokes on the show. I do like Misshi as a character too since he doesn’t get drawn in or flustered by the gaggle of girls all vying for his attention or the random panty shots et al, but he adds unneeded things like drama and romance into the gag comedy. He still hung around this episode, but it was mostly to do some dull setup for next week and to act as the keyholder to let the girls into the school’s secret underground waterpark for the night. Lizzie was better this week without Misshi around too. I really like her chemistry with Kurusu. Good old silent slapstick. I’m not sure I’ve seen much (or any) of it since Potemayo ended all those years ago.

I’m not sure there’s a whole ton else to say without just summarizing the jokes. The weather started bad, but they were going to practice through it anyway. It got progressively worse until it was raining fish and the entire court was flooded with Chitose was riding around on a giant salamander. Then it turned into a blizzard, so Misshi let them stay over in the school’s underground hot springs funland where they screwed around there, doing Eva parodies, stealing each other’s bubble boobs, doing bubble afro disco, and shooting lightspeed water guns through walls, etc.

And Hanako escaped again.

FYI, about a minute of the episode during the whole flooding scene was censored due to recent events I’m sure. Or maybe Xebec just got lazy and didn’t feel like animating it. I give even odds on both.

The battle between schools begins.

Even the screencaps look better this week. Glad Xebec didn’t let us down!

I can only hope that each time Hanako escapes it’ll be more elaborate than the last.

The Evangelion jokes/parodies were really random, but still pretty funny. The rest was good too! I like this show more and more every time, which kinda scares me! XD
