Aria TSA #02 — Girls Just Wanna Have Lunch

April 21st, 2011

A song that was infinitely more amusing than this episode.

Impressions:

At least JC Staff seems to be making my Survivor-esque culling of Thursday shows an easy decision… unless Tatusnoko and Brains Base completely fumble on their shows this week, which is entirely too possible for my tastes. This episode was pure undistilled tedium and consisted mostly of Kinji and Aria either yelling at each other or info dumping at each other. Meanwhile, they looked for a cat. And found the cat. Case closed. The Hysteria/Badass mode was basically the only good part of the first episode, and they cut out that along with any pretense of being about detectives, guns, or segways already to make it basically just the "have Aria blush as she eats things, also here’s Rie shrieking" show.

At least even Softenni uses its T&A as part of the humor of the show, even if the jokes it uses based off of it generally suck. This just throws in the constant thigh, breast, and come-hither poses in to try to distract you from the fact that this show has no substance whatsoever despite desperately pretending to contrary. Needless to say, of the four Thursday shows I’ve whittled the mass down to, this is the very very bottom of the totem at the moment. Unless the other two are similarly awful, I’m just giving this 5-10 minutes next week to not bore me to tears again before mounting my segway and riding off into the sunset, never looking back.

I tried to watch 7 shows this season, this is easily the worst of the lot. I don’t think an anime has offended me like this in a long while.

    • Wilfriback says:

Railgun did so the first time now this is the second who manages to insult me again, Good Job JCSTAFF, yay—*Cold Tone*

      • jingoi says:

At least the first 13 eps of Railgun were good (to me anyway, this show just sucks. I only watched this to give it a chance and for possible fanservice, when fog/beams/plants aren’t censoring Aria I’ll will return to this disaster.

  • Quik says:

I would have to say watching this episode was kind of painful, the character of Aria is quite simply annoying. The show could have some potential if they dialed Aria back a little. But as it stands i will be dropping this show as soon as i meet my “give all shows 4 episodes” rule.

    • Joe says:

I agree. She barges into his dorm against his will, beats him up in the morning because he hasn’t made her breakfast (as if that were his job), makes his broke ass buy her lunch when she’s clearly earned a ton of cash from her missions, and punches him for mistakes/misunderstandings that she herself made. What an unbearable bitch. And I hate how he just sits there and takes the abuse. YOU’RE AN UNSTOPPABLE NINJA ASSASSIN FIGHTAN MACHINE THAT IS LITERALLY FUELED BY TEENAGE LUST (neverending power supply lol), KICK HER LOLI ASS OUT.

Ahem. I realize that’s par for the course for any series featuring Kugyuu, and that most of the whiny/bitchy moments were in the LN, but Jesus Christ did they ever ramp it up in this episode. Thankfully, this series is less about romance than, say, ToraDora was, so the unlikeability of the Kugyuu character won’t ruin the experience as much (for me) this time around.

I’ll be glad when we get to episode 4 or 5 and Kinji stops being a selfish idiot. Then things actually happen! Until then, Shirayuki needs more screen-time.

    • Aex says:

Well, I guess it’s less selfish and more he doesn’t care. And he’s whiny. Way too whiny.

    light novel is BEAST AH

  • Nanaya says:

And people wonder why I always “root for” the Nagato/Korone/etc character type. Why? They’re quiet.

I mean, don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I want women to shut up. I just can’t stand idiots and enjoy the relatively peaceful characters (compared to the banshees). And since competence is apparently directly related to silence, I win again. No character should cause me mental and physical pain whenever they’re onscreen. Urgh.

  • Speedyshadow says:

And have anyone wonder y someone who is living alone would have 2 bunk beds in his bedroom?

  • Jack says:

Although this episode was a pox upon humanity, I’m going to continue to hold out hope that the rest of the series becomes awesome.

    • Nanaya says:

Given that the light novel is being translated at baka-tsuki at about 1 chapter every 2 days (it’s on vol5 c2 as of now), I’m really tempted to just give up on the anime if it continues showcasing the less interesting/more annoying parts.

      • Nanaya says:

Oh god. I just finished v5 c2. This must never be animated. It sounds ridiculous enough in text alone. That scene is too anime to be in anime.

I know JC is just in love with Rie playing the tsundere loli character, but god this one was particularly grating. After the semi-decent first episode I was actually interested in seeing where this would go but this episode is NOT where I think it should be heading.

Did anybody ELSE like the yandere Miko…?
