The World God Only Knows #02 — “Wonichan Moe”

October 13th, 2010

And I’m not going to make a single Battle Moon Wars joke.

Impressions:

About the same as the first episode, although the animation did take a noticeable hit. The music’s still weird and out of place and El’s still cute. And… that’s about all there is to it. If Keima would veer more towards sarcastic and snarky instead of of screaming all the time, this would be so much more enjoyable. The scene where he was playing it cool and practicing love confessions on El was easily the highlight. Too much of the rest was punctuated by his usual screaming though. Dude seriously needs to just take it down about eight notches. Although if he’s playing a PSP in a bathtub, he can’t be that bright to begin with.

The two halves were pretty much completely seperate this week. The first was El finding her place as his ‘sister’ and him explaining that ‘real’ sisters have BMW (Blood, Memory, and "Wonichan Moe"). Try not to overanalyze that last one. Then he accepts her… to more or less the same music they used as when he was explaining BMW. That’s a fine way to defuse a scene of any emotional impact. The second half was the start of his new conquest, the ‘tsun’ archetype girl, Mio, who is supposed to have her shell cracked by a direct confession of love, but that fails. Luckily, they only gave her about two lines and a single finger motion this week, so characterization is at an all time high here.

  • Kaisos says:

Mio’s unimportant anyway. The better heroines comes later.

    • Aroduc says:

      You keep saying that!

      • Kaisos says:

That’s because the first season won’t be covering the good heroines, unfortunately.

Really, the series is only good because of Keima’s character, and if you don’t like him, well, I can’t see you enjoying the show too much…

      • Ransom says:

The thing that makes this anime funny is indeed Keima xD

      • Shance says:

We all know how win Yui arc is. Too bad we’ll never get it this season.

    • amyable says:

Well, your wish is definitely gonna be granted: season two has already been confirmed for April of next year.

I’m a Hakua fan myself, so this is good news indeed.

    • Aex says:

Give me Tenri or things are gonna get ugly!! *sigh* Why couldn’t they throw her and Hakua in earlier, those two are so much better then any other girls…

  • cubedice says:

So the ED revealed the “heroines” appearing in this show, and I’m disappointed that Yui isn’t in it. Her arc is easily one of the best in the manga.

  • rufe says:

I actually thought she was a fine heroine, though I don’t think this episode quite finished introducing her.

  • SOSAnimeBoy says:

What the… did anyone notice Keima’s pecs in that picture of him buttoning up? How does a NEET gamer get so muscular?

    • Aroduc says:

Yeah, but I was closer to making a “he has more cleaveage than LC” joke.

    • anonfan says:

As both the sister of 2 brothers and the mother of a son, I can confidently say that genetics plays a much bigger part in a young man’s body type than exercise. Keima’s mother is definitely a mesomorph body type (we never see his father but he is likely a mesomorph too), therefore Keima logically has a mesomorph body and not an ectomorph or endomorph…thus he has pecs due to good genes even tho he is a gamer who hates exercise and gym class.

  • Anise_Punter says:

They’re not really going to win points for Elsee making silly faces when Ika Musume is over there at the beachhouse completely outclassing her.

After this one I’m definitely in the camp not approving of Akihisa as Keima. He needs to threaten to punt Elsee more or something.

As for Mio; they didn’t use any sort of Kugimiya for her so I’m counting that as a win.

  • Aex says:

We seem to be going at a 2-chapters-per-episode pace… this is acceptable! XD

Maybe it’s just anime vs manga, but I don’t remember Elsee being nearly this much fun! I suppose that ending dashes any hope of Hakua showing up this season… bleh, have to settle for the starting heroines, my favorite of which is definitely Kanon. Anyways, good episode, still enjoyable!

  • The Phantom says:

Lol at Keima’s mother going kallen mode, her hair changes a lot to look like hers.
