Occult Academy #07 — Electra Complex

August 16th, 2010

Hey guys, remember how the world is ending? No? Me either.

Impressions:

I hope that you were longing for a two episode centered Maya having a spat with Ami over her creepy as hell father who has apparently spent his life obsessively doting over Maya. At least they nailed creepy for once, in all the wrong ways. I’m not sure what was worse, Ami’s obsession with her father or her father’s obsession with a girl his daughter’s age. I feel like I’ve said it for the last month and a half, but this show excels when it takes the supernatural side of things and runs with it, not for its lack of character development or random angst spewing forth from tertiary characters totally ignorant of the main plot like some kind of demented oil well.

They also far overshot the ‘supernatural’ side of things this time. The writing’s bad, but I don’t think it’s so abjectedly horrible yet that little flying saucers leaving save points crop circles is convincing in the slightest. Ergo, that was transparent as hell from the getgo. I didn’t expect Ami’s father to be in on it, but that just added to the creepy factor. Combine this with the fact that Maya didn’t do a damn single thing wrong, and all we’ve got is a bitchy, whiny little brat with a daddy complex sucking up two episodes. How about that occult, eh A-1?

Preview:

Gee, will they reconcile? Who knows?

Too quick to jump on the Greek tragedy train, methinks. Ami’s relationship with her father seemed pretty normal. There’s is closer than most father daughter relationships, but nothing out of the ordinary, really. He just dotes and is concerned about his daughter’s well being. And that of her friends, apparently. He seemed like a cool dad.

Is this series 12 or 24 episodes long? For a series that started with a possessed dad floating around, and a guy coming from the future to save humanity, this has really slowed down, now we are focusing on each one of maya’s friends?

Well the episode was ok, but so far the plot in this anime is really lacking, I presume that there are plenty of plot twists ahead but so far the plot can be reduced to: “Let’s look for nostradamus key so we can save humanity” and thats really lame.

I think the most occult element in this series is Maya’s sentient/symbiotic, but overworn one piece dress as it adapts with Maya natural growth!

Hit the dress with some sonic rays and we’ll find out if she suffers from separation anxiety

I actually liked the first 4 eps but I have to agree that it’s slow down as hell the last few eps.I mean it’s only like 13 eps. Also, the characters are really well animated but I think the animators should have given the 2 main protagonists some NEW CLOTHES.I mean seriously,it’s the same one piece white dress and green suit every time. Are they just lazy?
