High School of the Dead #05 — The B-Team

August 2nd, 2010

Now featuring… uh… these guys.

I like how I got back to the hotel 10 minutes before the episode appeared in the usual places, and yet because of the terribad wireless, it was another 90 minutes before I could watch it. Last time I’ll need to deal with this nonsense for awhile at least. Although I am in airports all day tomorrow, so don’t count on Occult Academy until the wee hours or Tuesday.

Impressions:

If you’re an optimist and hoping that the recap last week meant more budget for this week, then good news. You won’t suffer from the crippling emotional trauma that optimism brings for much longer. I can barely remember when this show looked good anymore. Off-kilter art and stills abounded, particularly through the first half, but also especially bad at the very end. The little zombie fight was decent enough, but there was a lot of clever direction to cover up the lack of animation (like showing feet instead of people, or covering the camera with blood instead of showing shots/bodies). I do appreciate slick direction, but 95% of the time, the director is just picking the perfect upskirt angle for panty shots. It was also yet another one of those transitional "the cast is moving from A to B so… suddenly… zombies!" so wasn’t exactly thrilling in any way.

The writing remains as poor as ever. Shidou is impossible to take seriously when he’s literally molesting students with the others watching in fascination, and then practically in tears the moment he’s threatened by Hirano. The episode also began with a very lengthy strip-tease by the new character slowly peeling off layer after layer of clothing. Subtle. The deus ex machina of the entire team meeting up again was only matched by the deus ex machina that surrounded them all by zombies on a bridge in the first place. You’d think that they would realize at some point that if they stopped trying to go anywhere, they wouldn’t need to fight them, but then again, if you squared the collective IQ of every character on the show, you’d probably still have something imaginary.

    “Good bloody god.”

    Nice preview text haha.

  • Hayate says:

Oh boy, they actually are going to animate that particular chapter…Hmmm the number of people who’ll die of nosebleeds from the extremely heavy fanservice/ecchiness of that episode will likely be high…Geez I remember reading that and was like, damn this artist really went there and drew all that. Now to see it in that screenshot. Seriously…Good Bloody God…

  • skurai says:

The only thing that I felt like doing once I saw the shot of the BIG ASS BOOBS in the preview was laugh my ass off, I know that good is good, but that is just too much. Seriously its freaking ridiculous.

  • Mesousa says:

Why so much hate on the fanservice? You’re blogging SEKIREI.

    That makes no sense.

    • Aroduc says:

Presentation and context. A pie fight would be fine in Sekirei. It would not be fine in HSotD. Suspension of disbelief is not a universal constant between shows. One is trying to be irreverant and silly. One is trying to be gritty and dark. Guess which one gets to have more fluff and nonsense.

  • Aex says:

It might be pointless, but I still find the jealousy of Rei and Saya over Saeko x Takashi to be fun to watch. I can’t decide if I’m happy or sad that they’re elaborating on the fight-scenes from the manga. Takashi on the bike was kinda awesome, and Saeko killing zombies is always good, so as long as they don’t fall behind the manga I’ll be happy.

There’s one particular Saeko scene I would pay money to see animated next time. Well, maybe two… or three… *nosebleed*

    Could have fooled me.

  • The Phantom says:

I like this anime, yea the plot is garbage, there is too much fanservice, but at least is far more enjoyable than most of the other shows that are airing and killing zombies is always fun.

Of course, Occult Academy is better, Yes The Legend of Heroes is better, but thats it, lets face it this season is filled with garbage: Only a retard perverted otaku could enjoy sekirei, that show is shit. Student council is boring as hell, Ookami is unremarkable and average, Basara is a ridiculous over the top anime, the others are not even worth mentioning.

That beign said I’m skipping next episode since it seems to be a fanservice galore. I just hope that the one after goes back to its roots. Zombie murdering = yeah!

    • Pozzy says:

you mean 1 minute of zombie killing, 5 minutes of random stills panning across the screen, and 15 minutes of fan service as opposed to the 21 minutes of fan service the next episode will be?

  • wilson191 says:

This episode is considered racist by the korean officials…lol….they have so many free times that they watch anime that is not even aired in korea….
