Occult Academy #03 — The Anime no Chikara Tradition

July 14th, 2010

You’re killing me here, A-1.

I have no idea where this episode was leaked from. It just… appeared. A cursory trace leads to youTube of all places. I kind of wish it hadn’t though. Edit: Apparently a number of shows were leaked. See comments below for link.

Impressions:

A-1’s certainly getting predictible with this timeslot. This episode went off in a completely opposite direction from previous ones and turned out pretty atrocious for it. About 95% of it was spent on introducing the ditzy Mikaze as Uchida’s romantic interest a giant walking ball of painfully forced cuteness and inconsistent art. Maya showed up for maybe four minutes and spent most of that time randomly speculating about tengu. Uchida on the other hand, was feeling whiny and homesick after seeing himself on TV, so spent the better part of a week staring at Mikaze’s breasts before going out on a date with her. Remember, this is a show that purports to be about an imminent alien invasion at a school infested with ghosts. That’s why they wanted to have an episode centered around staring at boobs and other horrible romantic cliches. "Oooh, an indirect kiss through food." Fantastic, I haven’t seen that joke eight thousand times before. The closest we get to supernatural isn’t even Maya shooting some bat thing with a crossbow in the final 5 seconds of the episode, it was Uchida’s frog-eyed landlady.

The whole thing would have been more tolerable if not for the sound and visual effects. Mikaze’s entire schtick was filled with so many harp riffs, pink backgrounds, and all the same delicacy that is required to cram a herd of elephants into a phone booth using a weed whacker. It was bad enough to be able to actually see that they spent quite a bit of effort animating her fidgeting and hopping around to try to make her ‘cute.’ Alternatively, if Uchida had done anything besides staring at her chest or fawning over her for saying that the young version of him was cute, then maybe the romance could have been touching in some way. Sadly, it was none of the above. You’re going to get boob jokes and you’re going to like them. The best gag of the episode was Uchida’s potential future if he hooked up with whose-her-face… who immediately fell madly in love with him for not making fun of her hair.

This is all part of A-1’s plan to give me an aneurysm, I can tell.

Preview:

Uchida lands in crap.

    lol wut.
    totally did not expect a early leak of this episode, especially only after two days since the last episode aired.

    As for the actual episode, based on the screenshots, it looks like this next one seems like it’ll be disappointing. Shame since the first episode was so solid.

    Just read this over at ANN:

    â–º Naruto, Fairy Tail, Occult Academy Leaked Before Airing
    â–º http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2010-07-14/naruto-fairy-tail-occult-academy-leaked-before-airing

    An unknown party has posted several episodes from the Naruto Shippūden, Fairy Tail, Heroman, and Occult Academy anime series onto the YouTube website on Wednesday. All of the episodes have been posted before they will air in Japan on TV Tokyo or simulcast on the Crunchyroll website. The episodes include:

    * Naruto Shippūden 169 (Naruto 289, July 22 airing date)
    * Fairy Tail 40 (August 2)
    * Heroman 22-23
    * Occult Academy 3 (July 19)

    The party’s user channel is not currently available, but the videos remain on YouTube. The party also posted episodes 7-9 of Hime Chen! Otogi Chikku Idol Lilpri on June 3 (after they had aired in Japan).

      Interesting.

      A shame they couldn’t leak better shows.

      Edit: Wow. Leaked Heroman episodes from 6 and 7 weeks away. That’s… so weird.

  • Andy says:

    haha this is awsome too bad they took down everything i wanna see hero man 22-23!

    • Gin says:

      You want to watch an episode like five in advance from the others? That’s like skipping to the end of a book when you are halfway through.
      I hope nobody subs those episodes or redistributes them. That would be a pain in the ass.

  • Sam says:

    Damn, I was wondering if I had experienced a time slip when I saw this post.

  • hashi says:

    None of the main episode staff on ep3 of Occult Gakuin (writer, storyboarder, director) was on either of the first two episodes. And it showed.

    I kept expecting the “romantic interest” to be revealed as one of the aliens. I wish Uchida seemed more capable and less scared. His nostalgia was a good thing, but not played anywhere near as well as it could have been.

    So, a Crunchyroll leak? Like the Funimation one a few seasons ago?

    Also, nice Tweet by the OA director… “[These leaks are] clearly the work of a tengu.” ^_^

    I thought Uchida had already landed in crap, after all he landed in this show
