Overrun by Stray Bravers! #26 — The Plague of Robots

May 18th, 2010

In a way, it’s amazing that they managed to screw this up.

Impressions:

See, here’s the thing about parody. You can’t just interject your characters into a new setting and call it a day. You need to overplay the cliches. Poke fun at the standard tropes. Have the characters react in accordance to their normal situations instead of the standards for whatever genre you’ve thrust them into. Playing it straight the entire time is not funny or even interesting. This is proper parody.

This episode, however, did absolutely none of that. It was just twenty horrible minutes of terrible mecha using the Stray Cats characters… only they weren’t the Stray Cats characters. Everybody was renamed, had different personalities, etc. You can derive about as much pleasure from this episode as you can from just looking at some fanservice shot of the girls dressed in their adorable little sentai outfits, because that’s about the only interesting thing that this episode had going for it. No actual jokes or anything for the entire bloody episode. It really truly feels like they took some forgotten awful 1970s mecha and redrew the characters. Even Galaxy Angel did a far better sentai episode than this and it covered 52 ‘episodes’ in 10 minutes.

I’m glad I dropped this at episode 4.

  • luka says:

    why they do this
    where is orginal episode :(

  • d4rkie says:

thanks for this post. will skip this ep. ^__^

  • Aex says:

I was wondering about this, but this episode just confirms it… they really must have NOTHING to work with as far as original material! They must not be getting any looks at the upcoming manga chapters or anything, and since none of their writers seem to be playing with a full deck, we get atrocities like this! I refuse to believe this episode was made with any sort of regard to the manga, it’s just too tragic…

    • Joule says:

Aren’t there like 8 volumes of light novel to animate?

      • Aex says:

Oh right… well, that makes it even worse! They have stuff they could use, and the anime is STILL this horrible?! They need to change the name, I don’t want this associated with the anything else related to Mayoi Neko Overrun!

  • sage says:

Not even hot evil Kaho can save this show.

  • ark noir says:

They’ve run out of source material so they’re making filler up. I personally blame the manga scans group CxC who have fallen behind and left AIC in the lurch.

  • Pozzy says:

someone please remind me why i havent dropped this show yet.

  • Silver says:

    @ ark noir

They did not ran out of source material. In fact, they have a lot concerning the novels. They’re just being retarded. What they should have done is fire all directors that does something like what they did here and episode 4. Well at least it’s….. unpredictable and somewhat entertaining.

  • Ninja Penguin says:

The first few episodes were so promising…WHY for the love of god did AIC throw it all away to give us this trainwreck!? :(

  • Moogy says:

Why do shows always default to “Braver,” anyway? Bamboo Blade used it too, though comparing Bamboo Blade to Mayoi Neko is a laughable concept at best.

  • Dual says:

    Best random episode ever

  • ark noir says:

Silver you silly sausage i already knew of the remaining novels left lol it was just a bit of sarcasm ;)

  • Anise Punter says:

“just looking at some fanservice shot of the girls dressed in their adorable little sentai outfits”

    and how!

  • DmonHiro says:

How the FUCK did they get the idea to do fillers? They have SEVEN MORE NOVELS TO ADAPT? What the fuck is wrong with these morons?

  • Anon999 says:

I cannot believe they did THIS. They made an homage to the Brave Series. It would’ve been even better if they didn’t have moe girls piloting the mecha.

  • DK says:

If there’s one thing that this anime is doing right, it’s the previews for the next episode. I can totally see the future of the anime industry in there: using 3D models for characters with the faces just drawn and “painted” on. A lot of companies can save a heck lot of money with that technique!
