Arakawa Under the Bridge #06 — The Bassmaster

May 9th, 2010

Fewer irritating children, more master fishing.

Impressions:

Episodes of this show live and die based on which characters that they decide to focus on each week. Sister, Maria, and Stella are the A-Team. Star-For-Brains is… not. Furthermore, and rather unfortunately, ten minutes of the Metalhead siblings is also about nine and a half minutes too much. If Shaft had just ended their segment after they called Kou a pimp, it would have definitely been a marked improvement. Unless children in shows can be classified as a weapon of mass destruction, including psychological, they should be seen and not heard neither seen nor heard. The fact that they brought back that irritating guitar riff with a vengeance didn’t improve my mood much as this episode creeped on either.

There’s not too much else to say beyond that. The guitar competition went pretty much as expected. Teaching people with metal tied to their heads how to swim went exactly as expected. It did pick up a little bit towards the end with the secrets of health and whatnot, but I found myself hoping for some kind of crazy-ass Japanese voodoo treatments and it only went towards magical kappa water… which I suspect is LSD. For a place where suppositories are still in relatively common use, you’d think they’d be able to make a better joke about treating a cold than magical turtle water.

    Nino in a sukimizu?

Two good things about this episode, then. :D

I thought it was still pretty funny, and I hate the damn show; it’s about the only thing I really watch now, though, what a shame.

I thought the whole middle segment with the metal headed brothers was very good. Nino’s attempts at teaching them and their attempts at learning were hilarious, and it was nice to see Riku discover that he can be of use by just doing what he wanted.
