The Demon King in the Back Row #03 — The Ascension of the Demon

April 16th, 2010

Whoa. Why can’t all the episodes be like this?

Impressions:

Wow. I don’t know where the second half of this episode came from, but I like it. Now we’re finally getting somewhere. Sure, it could have definitely been better animated and Hattori could stand to be so much less of a wet blanket when Sai A-chan is finally crushing limbs indiscriminantly, but man… more limb crushing and beam cannons please. Even Kena’s showing that she’s far far sharper than she’s been letting on, both immediately foiling Fujiko’s plan and turning it to their own advantage. I choose to believe that the lesbian orgy at the end was just a lucky happenstance. Sure, it’s no severed head, but I’m sure Fujiko enjoyed it.

Sadly, that’s just the second half. The first half dragged to hell and back with more plodding explainations about magic magick and… man… I don’t even remember what else anymore. It was basically all just foreshadowing for the second half anyway, not that a single one of us is surprised that the girl who masturbates in front of her severed brother’s head is an evil mage. You probably think that I’m joking about her masturbating too, but no. That threesome with Sai and the severed head is almost looking like a certainty at this point. They also very briefly introduced the student council, but basically just did a roll call before hopping into Kena’s magical rice cooker and the adventures beyond.

Brief Summary:

Short flashback about Fujiko’s brother dying and her vowing to become stronger. Back in real-time, Sai learns about Hattori’s fight against the black magic users at the school while Korone performs penis checks. He meets briefly with the student council, who are quite interested with him, and then tries to make a move on Korone’s tail again to get a chance to go deal with Hattori. Kena busts in and monopolizes their time for awhile with rantings about rice before Sai tries to get her to leave. Kena, ever the wingman, doesn’t want to get in the way of him and Korone being naughty, so runs off. Korone gets her tail pulled and Sai heads out.

He’s attacked from behind once inside and immediately goes into full-on demon mode, crushing arms and limbs of his attackers. Even moreso when they drag out his beaten lackey. Unfortunately, Hattori shows up to spoil Sai’s fun by being a damp rag. Sai goes for the drug/gun Fujiko gave him, but the pills are missing. Hattori lays down the law before running off. Unfortunately, Hattori’s within her rights to obliterate him basically, so Sai’s got no real choice but to fight. Hattori’s feelings are still conflicted, and Kena’s watching her invisibly.

The next day, Hattori’s entire executor squad attacks Sai, but when they go one on one, Kena interrupts them and tells everybody how close the two are and the vow they made. The students turn on Hattori and she’s forced to join Sai to protect herself. Korone shoots a huge blast at them, which Sai deflects into the air and turns into rice that makes everybody high. The rice was made with the drugs that Fujiko gave him (heavily diffused), which Kena stole. Korone confirms them to have black magic infused in them. That night, Fujiko’s trapped under a pile of horny girls being forced to ‘enjoy’ her just deserts.

    Rice that makes you high?

The sad thing is, that would probably sell really well…..

    Hurray for the violence

  • Aex says:

NOW we’re gettin’ somewhere!! Would’ve been nice if Fujiko had been revealed as an evil mastermind, but this was close enough. I like it, do it again!!!

  • Anon999 says:

They might as well made this anime into an eroge. Hell, I’m surprised there might be an eroge by the time this anime ends.

  • Pozzy says:

i certainly enjoyed this episode and, at the very least, i believe there could be something more brewing in this show than a school life/harem/echhi/comedy with some action tossed in.

Sai in devil king mode was pretty awesome.

    • Aex says:

He went into Devil King mode a little too easily for my taste. Thought he would’ve tried more peaceful (or at least less violent) solutions before that, since he’s trying NOT to be the Devil King. It was still awesome, just saying…

    • Yue says:

His powers exemplifies Warlocks more than Demon Lords.

  • karasu says:

    the summary made no sense.

  • nothikago says:

    MAGARE!

  • The Phantom says:

Wow this episode was bloodtastic!, I never expected this episode to be so bloodylicious, more violence please!, this is definitely the best show of the season, just wow.

  • Jack Damn says:

Great episode. Love’d it when he sunk into Demon Mode. Snapping cartoon limbs always make me wince a bit (especially on Friday).

The only part of this EP that worries me is loading a gun up with white rice and shooting people. It’s a simple carbohydrate and those kids are likely to become fat because of that. I can’t condone simple carbohydrate food violence.

I wasn’t overly fond of the way Hattori switched sides so quickly either at the end. I mean, I’m down with a Hattori x Sai pairing, but come on…she flipped too fast. A real swords”person” would have slit open their gut rather than change sides.

    • Aex says:

It wasn’t really that fast considering the situation and Keena’s little revelation. I loved how Sai slapped Hattori in the face with “I’ve been saying the same things and you never listened to me, so why should they listen to you?” Doesn’t feel so good to be on the other end, does it? HA!

It wasn’t really that fast considering the situation and Keena’s little revelation.

Good point. I forgot about that (Keena’s revaluation).

    • Nanaya says:

Everybody knows the green haired android is the most amusing AND less common/cliche pairing :P

  • Albedo says:

Unfortunately Nanaya, that’s why that pairing won’t be the one that becomes canon. It’s friggin keena, however much I wish it was our emotionally stunted, penis curious, green-haired android, it’s clear at this point already who Sai will most likely end up with. IF he ends up with any particular one. I’m hoping for a polygamy finish right now. Then I can just pretend that Korone was successful as a love interest.

    • Aex says:

Indeed, the OP in particular seems to say that Keena is gonna get Sai, although going by the usual laws of Harem, I think Hattori is still the most likely. It’ll be interesting to see what happens there, if anything. Stupid 13 episodes, rushing the story…

      • Albedo says:

The rule of the first heroine is in hattori’s favor but everything else is screaming Keena. Why is it that the emotionally stunted characters always get the shaft? T_T

      • Nanaya says:

Actually, Albedo, for that last part its technically the opposite :P

…no idea what drove me to say that…
