Winter Premier Week Wrapup
January 12th, 2010
A much more peaceful time than usual.
Maybe a little late since nothing new has aired for the past couple days, but whatever, let’s run with it. Nothing’s left but Nodame on the already packed Thursdays and the pseudo-OVA Katanagatari.
So anyway, standard boilerplate here. There’s a limited amount of time in the day, and my schedule for watching stuff syncs up more or less with the actual broadcast schedule. Therefore, there’s only so much that I can deal with in a day, so here’s the quick list of all the shows over the past week (plus the ongoing ones I’m already following) along with a short blurb representing whatever the first thing that comes to mind when I think about the first episode with the side goal of hopefully infuriating as many people as possible. I like to think of it as a game. Comprehensive… it is not, but if you want more information, each one is linked to my post on it.
Anything that I am 100% certain I’m going to cover for at least one more week gets a little crown, but that doesn’t mean I’ll stick with it past the next episode or two, especially for KG-A and Railgun, both of which I have a very low opinion of at the moment. Likewise, just because I’m not psyched about something doesn’t mean that I won’t pick it up after checking out a second episode. If you’ve got any input, flames, or desperate begging, go wild.
MONDAY
Chuu-Bra!
Better than it should be, except for everything about it.
So-Ra-No-Wo-To
Join the Light Music Squad! Now with more hamfisted generic drama!
TUESDAY
Ladies vs Butlers!
If it improves as much each episode as it did from first to second, it will actually become an awesome show by around… June.
WEDNESDAY
BakaTest
A genuinely clever, charming, well made, unique little gem of the season. Shocking.
Dance in the Vampire Bund
Also unique, but uniquely tedious for the first 80% of the episode.
Guardian Charm Himari
ZEXCS can do so much better than this, but it’s still a perfectly functional little light action/romantic comedy.
THURSDAY
DRRR!
90 seconds of action do not make up for 1200 seconds of listening to teenagers gossip.
Hidamari Sketch × â˜†â˜†â˜†
Looking better than ever, and I’m sure I’ll have even less intelligent to say about it than ever.
Hidden God
Delicious foccaia bread sandwiching a stale mayonnaise center.
KIDDY GiRL-AND
The story’s ground to a halt, the characters haven’t developed at all, and the production has plummeted. The last couple months haven’t been kind to this show.
FRIDAY
A Certain Scientific Railgun
Three months later, and we’re still watching Saten whine. At least Index bit things.
SATURDAY
Cobra: The Animation
Back to the 80s with you! The power of Christ compels you! The power of Christ compels you!
The Qwaser of Stigmata
I’m fairly sure I would have enjoyed this less without the censoring… which still leaves it as nothing more than aggressively average.
SUNDAY
Hanamaru Kindergarten
Trying to sell itself on being cute, which is difficult with all the mutant freaks running around.
Wrapup:
I’m not totally committed yet, especially on Thursdays but right now my schedule is tentatively looking like:
Monday: MEH
Tuesday: Ladies vs Butlers I guess
Wednesday: Himari and Bakatest… maybe Bund
Thursday: Hidamari Sketch and either KG-A or Hidden God
Friday: Railgun… out of spite at this point, or if it has moved to Thursdays, it’s right out.
Saturday: Qwaser… maybe
Sunday: MEH
And that’s a wrap. There are a lot of shows carrying over on some days, just none of them are things I liked at all, which means that this season is weighted a tad heavily in the middle. Winter is pretty much always the slowest season anyway, so it’s not totally surprising. I’ve got other stuff to occupy my time… and I should probably get going on Moonlit Lovers too for that matter before my classes kick in with assignments requiring more effort than "Post about yourself on the class message board." Higher education is so overrated.

I don’t see what’s wrong with Kindergarten. I mean, I was laughing intensely on the first episode. Heck, this was probably the most I’ve laughed since last episode of Kimi ni Todoke. I could see why you didn’t like Durarara, but get your hopes up for Bund since it’s Shaft.
