So-Ra-No-Wo-To #01 — Redux… Again

January 4th, 2010

Why does this season suddenly seem even more full of rehashes than last?

First Episode Disclaimer:

Blah blah blah. Too lazy to copy and paste this season. I try to watch everything. I can guarantee that I won’t like most, and enjoy pointing out flaws even in things I do like. Feel free to add your own opinions.

Sorry this is a bit late. My new 2.5 hour Monday morning class ended up being 3 hours of group hugs and hearing how special everybody was. And then I was nearly sideswiped by a firetruck on my way home. It hasn’t been a great day so far.

Impressions:

Let’s see. Moron girl who wants to play music joins club military and meets people who are going to teach her to play her crippled instrument. Let me think. Where have I seen this before? At least spring for something with valves.

Well, I suppose I got almost exactly what I was expecting with this one. I’m a little disappointed in how cheaply this was produced in parts though. It mostly looks rather good, although they’re aiming pretty low in terms of animation complexity. As the insert song kicked in for the second half, we got to look at little else but stills for a minute or two. The backgrounds still look like they got at least four or five times as much attention as the characters. At least the music was nice, and there’s a bit more of a mythical element about the show than I expected, which is welcome. It’s a shame absolutely nothing interesting actually happens.

However, the bread and butter of this show is firmly in "moronic girls acting ‘cute,’" and these are some world champs when it comes to mental damage. Granted, we didn’t really see much of anybody but Kanata, who tried to jump off a balcony in her panties to chase an owl, and then manages to fall off a cliff immediately afterward, but I’m pretty sure I can chart out the archetypes for the rest of the cast already. Luckily, everybody has their bugle at hand. Why carry a compass or a map, when you can cart around a trumpet? A magical trumpet that can make a wide open bridge sound like an acoustic hall no less. I’m sure the occupants of the town love it when people start blasting their horns before dawn too.

With shows like these, it all comes down to how much you like the characters because lord knows there’s nothing else going on, and honestly, I despise Kanata already. This show seems like a shameless K-On knockoff in every way except for the giant bird skeleton… which… admittedly, would have improved my K-On experience immensely. I saw very little here that interests me, but given what it’s trying to rip off, I think I can already take a guess at how rabid the fanbase will be.

  • Black Box says:

I think you might actually hate character driven series, Aroduc. Or shows that revolve around depicting/exploring them. And saying it’s a knockoff of K-ON seems inaccurate since it’s barely like K-ON, design-wise aside. And don’t tell me you think K-ON invented ditzy main characters now…

Also, not getting any Aria/Kino’s Journey/Haibane Renmei vibes?

  • mefloraine says:

Unfortunately from the review, it sounds like you came into this show biased against it and were unwilling to give up the bias and give it a fair chance. Pity.

  • Anonymous says:

Seriously. With this kind of bias, why even bother making a review in the first place? Could have been settled with a simple “I don’t like it. Skip.”

  • shh227 says:

Well I’m not much of K-on fan but this was a good first episode to start off. The only reason it reminds me of k-on is that Rio looks like Mio, Kanata looks like Yui, and that girl with the glasses looks like Mugi-chan, but whatever.

I expect that it going to be more slice-life rather than action. I really hope the budget can keep it through all 12 or 13 episodes. Also I like the bgm for most of the time. Usually in other animes we get such generic music but this is quite unique.

  • Serpit says:

The problem here is here that while it doesn’t necessarily have to be K-ON, the show really does try to ride on the success of shows like it. Just compare the anime characters to the original designs, and tell me they haven’t been moefied immensely.

That said, beautiful music and scenery, but I doubt I’ll watch it anyway.

  • shh227 says:

Look at Angel Beats PV and tell me if anything not been Haruhified! LOL!

  • Yue says:

Harsh words there… what will it take to capture the interests and machinations of the benevolent Aroduc? ^^

(one Moe show got shot at, lol)

  • Anonymous says:

Wow, it’s amazing how quick shows like this get defended if Aroduc says anything bad about them, but gets praised when he says bad things about good shows. Seems to me that Aroduc just has a hatefull side, fine by me since he seems to hate everything equally.. but yeah kinda shows something about fans of these kinds of shows, my japanese class chewed me out when I was asked if I liked K-ON and said daikirai… even though they asked me on it…

  • Rawr says:

Haven’t watched, but I will gladly watch anything Aroduc hates, since he hates mostly everything, so I’ve learned to take it with a pinch (ton) of salt. Still, he’ll blog about shitty shows for the most part because he has more to say about the shitty shows. Pick this up Aroduc. You know you want to.

  • Fate says:

Aroduc is a female and Aroduc wants to watch DURADURA!

  • Kiseki says:

I found Kanata kind of adorable. She’s very much like Akari.

I’m rather amused at how half (well, more than half) of the interwebs think that this is a Keion clone with retarded moeblobs and the other half go on about how it gives them “ARIA vibes”.

Granted, I am within the latter half.

    • Anonymous says:

well given how people see the similar character style, while ignoring the studio, and that two(?) of the characters play the trumpet, ignoring the possible points of trumpet+military unit, just jump on the bandwagon instead of thinking for themselves…

personally I like little details like how the country is so hard up for troops/supplies they will take anyone who volunteers, and how their uniforms are a standard full grown mans instead of custom made

  • popp says:

I agree with mefloraine I’ve noticed that this person’s blog is always bias with pretty much every anime its blogged…

    • SlashZero says:

Well no duh it’s a blog, not a news website.

I pretty much follow this blog just to hear Aroduc’s take on series, even though I disagree with him very often.

With that aside, this show does give off a lot of Aria vibes with the level of detail in the backgrounds and the nothing happens at all plot.

  • wilson191 says:

Will anyone actually recommend this show?
Still no sign of good quality anime for this season…for Aroduc at least…lol

    • Yue says:

Ummm. Go with your gut~feeling… ^_~

Don’t take anyone’s word for it. This is Tenka Seiha afterall (except the Fansevice, Games, and Deep Thoughts portion of Aroduc’s blog).

  • Sheba says:

I watch it for the scenery porn and the gratuitous french. How in the world did they choose french of all languages?

  • Bah says:

I’ll give this a shot, though I doubt I’ll make it far past the opening. Fucking moeshit.

  • Anonymous says:

I love when the new season starts because we get to hear all the crying when Aroduc says a show that’s “supposed” to be great isn’t his cup of tea.

  • Lero says:

… puttings aside the infamous characters design, this series didn’t got my interest, so I doubt to keep watching it.

  • rincewind says:

Haibane Renmei vibes someone says? This has just become serious bussiness!!! Must watch.

  • Blueblazer says:

This was horrible and a dissapoint, I expected ATLEAST some comedy but nothing.

  • The Phantom says:

Utterly bored by this episode, is not a bad show I guess, but this is not the kind of anime that I like.

  • rincewind says:

Watched. I liked it. Im waiting eagerly for the second. Frenchanese is awesome. Or its Japanchnese? :P
