A Certain Scientific Railgun #09 — Dental Work

November 27th, 2009

I guess it’s a step in the right direction.

Impressions:

Well, the start of the fight here was good enough, but the ending was ruined by a big ol’ expositional dump from Kuroko where she went through the process of explaining the punk’s power, explaining various facets of her power, and showing him exactly how she was going to beat him. They could have done a lot more with Dr. Light punk (DC supervillian, not Megaman inept Santa-wannabe) too, not to mention the question of why he abruptly gave up after Kuroko dragged him to safety or where all the Judgment people came from. I mean, it’s not like they showed the entire surrounding area three seconds prior, completely devoid of people and swat vans. I think I’d have rather seen her fight the telekinetic (or ferrokinetic… it wasn’t really shown what he could do other than throw pipes). Or hell, the first guy. All Kuroko did was teleport him onto his back, and suddenly, he’s apparently out of the fight.

Saten was the main focus of the episode though, and her whining certainly isn’t winning any awards in my books. "I’m so sad. I have no power. Oh, I know, instead of learning a martial art or trying to do anything, I’m going to pick up a coma-inducing dangerous audiodrug." As far as I’m concerned, she deserves whatever happens to her. Maybe even twice over. What even happened to that guy that she tried to save anyway? He literally just vanished in the 3 seconds between Saten running out and Kuroko showing up. And I’m still annoyed that they’re simultaneously trying to build Level Upper as some kind of mysterious mystery while it’s also findable by a school girl using Google. Judgment’s investigational department must be terrible.

At least the action bit made an episode that went pretty much nowhere actually somewhat interesting for a brief period until Kuroko felt compelled to put an end to it with a lecture about their powers.

Ahhhh the IRONY! Mikoto refuses to be dragged in yuri things with Kuroko…. and Touma rejects/ignores in many ways Mikoto attempts to beat/charm him.

    • Nanaya says:

From what I’ve heard, that’s because what Touma’s hand blocks includes soulmates and stuff. He couldn’t end up with her or anyone else in the cast if his life depended on it (and it always seems to).

You’d think that someone could explain the effects of his hand to them and save everybody a ton of trouble, so they could brainstorm for a solution… With his luck though, they’d probably all think to cut it off.

I gotta wonder though….in the manga, the light-bender is wearing a jacket. Why’d they bother to take that out for the anime? *shrug*

  • kiryuu says:

had a chance to watch that bit.. from what I remember the whole glass through pillars thing was a lot more subtle in the manga until Kuroko dropped the last pane in place.. not going to go back through the manga to find that scene though :)

The dude didn’t fight back because Kuroko was already in physical contact with him. She could do any number of painful and/or deadly things the moment he makes any wrong move.

And are you seriously saying that a middle school girl should take up martial arts so she can do battle with massively superpowered beings? And that that’s a smarter option than taking an audio “drug” that has demonstrably given other people powers?

It’s not like she KNOWS all the bad side effects that go along with the Level Upper anyway. She’s just heard rumors and speculation. On the other hand, she’s most definitely seen the Level Upper give people powers.

    • Shinji103 says:

Why would you trust your health and well-being to an under-the-table audio drug? That alone makes it sound as bad as heroine or crack. You don’t /need/ to know any bad things about it; it speaks for itself. And if it were safe, why is it being issued through suspicious channels and not officially accepted? Using Level-Upper is no better than an athlete using steroids to get ahead.

another good episode of “a certain lesbian teleporter”

Pretty amusing how Kiyama doesn’t think that men would be interested in her body, considering that she’s got better style than most sleep-deprived researchers I’ve had the pleasure of meeting…

And I think that Kuroko scared the toothless wonder there into submission by dropping the building on him and then teleporting them both out before they got squished.

    level upper is iphone

    believe it

Well, since judgment seems entirely comprised of middle school girls, it’s no wonder they’re a bit… lacking… in the investigation department.
