Sweet Blue Flowers #01 — Mixed Metaphors

July 1st, 2009

Yeah, don’t look at me. I feel like I’m half-asleep now.

New Season Disclaimer:

I try to watch at least the first episode of every new show in a season. However, do not expect anything I say to be fair or balanced. I value my own entertainment above all else and there are some genres or methods of presentation that I just plain do not like and I’m not going to pretend otherwise. I’ll attempt to at least make a cursory explaination of what did and did not please me about each show, but it’s just a simple fact of life that my tastes are mine alone. Feel free to express your own opinions in the comments, just keep it under control. This is just television after all.

This is a Crunchyroll show for this season. The first episode’s up there should you want to watch it.

Impressions:

So… I made it halfway through this episode and was about to slip into a coma… but then Umineko was ready to watch, so I paused this. However, dread overtook me when I realized I had to come back and finish this off. I mustered up my courage and delved once more into the depths of corny lesbian romance and persevered to the very end. However, since the last JCStaff show that I watched with their patented watercolor backgrounds was Nabari, I did enjoy thinking to myself that lurking in this gated community of dainty chick lasagna was… a dainty boy ninja. It did make some of the more dull parts a bit more exciting at least.

Okay. I make no illusions here. This was a chick show through and through, starring Pouty and Peppy and their not-quite-so forbidden love. Either that, or I’m misunderstanding the metaphor in the OP of them naked and dropping flowers on each other. Subtle. At least it makes no illusions about what it is. The show’s certainly not going to win any awards for production, except maybe the Grammy for "Boxiest CG Vehicles," although the music is mostly nice enough. The overly breathy OP grates on my musical sensibilities, but I’m a snob like that. Sea Story’s got it out-wheezed anyway.

If you lap this kind of stuff up (bad innuendo not intended) and are already counting the hours until the next Marimite, then I think you’ll eat this up. Then again, what the hell do I know? I don’t like Marimite either. This whole genre is a strange and mystifying frontier full of magnolias that looks suspiciously like vaginas and teenagers who are full of melodrama instead of hormones. It’s certainly not going to entice anybody who wasn’t on board the HMS Girlylove. If you’re like me and you don’t, then you’ll probably also be bored to tears and just be hoping that a piano drops on Pouty just to get this moving.

Oh well, I gave it a shot. C’est la vie.

The OP alone makes me feel sleepy, but I am a JC Staff whore. I will persevere! I’m not sure why!

    • Joule says:

If you made it through Nabari no Ou like Aroduc this will be a snap. I don’t know why I finished that series either.

I thought it was a nice little opening episode but I like slow paced relaxing shows. Will have to see where the romance/drama goes.

  • chad001 says:

I for one, did NOT make it through Nabari… it was so damn random, it was inconsistent, and the main character was a little angsty boy, who hot no development, and just unleashed roots… omg…

  • The Phantom says:

Lesbians… Meh! and on top of that it looks painfully slow and boring. *Discarded to the trash can* next new show please.

    • kamina121 says:

I agree that I won’t be watching this, but if you’re into this sorta show go for it.
