Asura Cryin’ #01 — Nice Sleeves
April 2nd, 2009
You know what they say about a girl with big sleeves…
New Season Disclaimer:
I prefer to give every show a chance. You never know when your dream-eating insect Mai HiME knockoff will turn out to be a psychological romantic thriller, or the strange moeblob show will be full of wit and urine jokes. However, my preferences are still my preferences, and while I’ll endeavor to at least convey what I do or do not like, there are genres of shows that I just plain don’t particularly enjoy. My opinions are based on nothing more than a gut reaction to what I watched literally 10-15 minutes prior and should be construed as nothing more and nothing less than that.
Impressions:
Well, I can’t say that I’m overly impressed with this one. It just wasn’t engaging at all for almost the entire span of the episode. I get it. There’s a suitcase trunk, and it’s pretty mysterious. Apparently it contains muck that turns into a mecha. I’m glad we spent so much of the episode talking about it. The real mystery are these people’s sleeves. How much starch does it take to get them that huge? I also already want to tie Tomo down and give him a haircut. What the hell is that thing dangling on the side of your head? Damn hippies. I was rather disappointed that they didn’t do anything creative with Misao either. You’ve got a ghost gimmick… do something with it. She’s just there the entire time, like some kind of supernatural-detector detector with no other purpose.
Things got a little more exciting towards the end, but it still didn’t feel particularly well put together. We’ve got at least three… if not four or five… factions all attacking Tomo and Misao over the suitcase at once. Then again, I’m not sure any amount of explaination would have helped out a Mexican standoff between a pyrokinetic mobster, firearms Ciel knockoff, and mecha-summoner priest, along with a heterochromatic priestess lurking in the window. It was produced decently enough, although there really wasn’t much to animate honestly. I wasn’t wowed, but there were a few times, especially during facial closeups, where the artistic perspective seemed a little wonky.
I guess it wasn’t bad, but they’ve got a lot of work ahead of them to pull this together, or at the very least, have it make a little more sense. I’m willing to give it another episode or two to see if it can pull it off, but there’s not much here that excites me thus far.

Wait… where’d the muck mecha go?

…Still don’t get what so fun about being first… and I thought this show was pointed more towards the romance genre… not mecha….
