Minami-ke: Welcome Back #06 — Summer Daze

February 8th, 2009

Needs more beach.

Tired of waiting for a better raw. Let’s go with this.

Impressions:

Well, if you ignore the really terrible pacing, I suppose it was a decent episode, but parts 2 and 3 dragged without actually having any real jokes to speak of. I expected that Maki would have been able to pick up some better teasing tricks given her friends, but apparently she’s just lame. Fujioka is even lamer, but that’s neither here nor there. They’ve done the rapid fire flashbacks before, and I hated them then as well. What’s the point of 5 seconds in the present just so you can say "and then…" before jumping back to the past? It reeks of blatant space filling and I detest it. Throwing in flashbacks inside of flashbacks is just wanton abuse of flashbacking. I’m also a little annoyed that the beach stuff was about 90% of the preview last week, but about 5% of the actual episode. Screw you, deceptive advertising.

Part 1 was flashbacks and flashbacks within flashbacks about everybody going to the beach and the disappearance and reappearance of Fujioka… the bear. Part 2 was basically just Maki’s attempt to embarass Fujioka by teasing him about using Kana’s spoon. Dude, if spoons count for that kind of crap, I have bad news for you about that time you went to Denny’s. Uchida tried to catch up on her summer homework after screwing around all summer in part 3 with Mako-chan’s incompetent assistance… which mostly meant needling Chiaki until she revealed her master plan to let Uchida copy her homework after suffering. Finally, part 4 had everybody bringing over fancy foods, and Chiaki stealing Kana’s portions as revenge for all the summer teasing.

Preview:

Forget Makoto. Where’s my Hosaka episode?

The first part’s pretty close to Chapter 38 of the manga. I don’t recognize the last bit with the curry or Mako-chan…. but I guess, after leaving him out of the first four episodes, they had to bring him in SOMEWHERE.

… and Crusader’s going to have a fun time with this ep as well as next week’s preview. There’s no way he’s ever, EVER reclaiming his manhood. Now whether he goes the Mizuho route (OtoBoku) or the Mariya route (Maria+holic) is up to Kana.

  • Haesslich says:

… and, as I feared last week, he really does have a whole bunch of hair clips now to accessorize with. And he’s better drawn than Haruka a few times, too. Yup, no way back for Makoto-kun. Or for Asread, for that matter.

  • Totali says:

I don’t think they have Denny’s in Japan.

    Shows what you know, chump.

  • Ryan A says:

Denny’s HO! They seem to be breezing through the seasons with each episode.

  • ithekro says:

Hosaka will appear when he wants to appear. (if the timeline is maintained from the last season, he should have headed to America at somepoint after we saw him with the umbrella (late winter/early spring), where it is now the end of summer.

It is unclear if time is passing normally or not in this show. I’d assume not, but if it is, than wouldn’t Chiaki be in grade 6 now….Haruka and Kana in their respective class 3s….and Hosaka graduated?

  • lonny says:

Im pretty sure Dennys Japan is owned buy 7-11 Japan(which also now owns the North American 7-11 chain).
Because useless knowledge is power !

  • Hibiki says:

For a second, I thought Akikan has better animation (at least, less deformed figures and more consistent drawing) than Minami-ke. What is this world coming to!!!

On a second note, Haruka in twintails!!

    Fujioka….the pedobear

I think the spoon scene would have been funnier if they made it more apparent the guest spoon he was using was also one Maki used. Or at least a fission mailed expression by Maki.
