2009 Winter Premiers Wrapup and Coke Party

January 12th, 2009

Well, it’s sunny where I live at any rate.

Well, everything that’s going to air has aired except for Munto (Tuesday) and Fresh PreCure (Pfft, no).

There’s a limited amount of time in the day, and since I’m one of the few, the proud, the semi-competent with Japanese, my schedule for watching stuff syncs up more or less with the actual broadcast schedule. Therefore, there’s only so much that I can deal with in a day, so here’s the quick list of all the shows over the past week (plus the ongoing ones I’m already following) along with a short blurb designed to reduce a 24 minute episode to a quarter second bullet point. Comprehensive… it is not, but if you want more information, each one is linked to either my post on it, or Totali/Omni’s for the stuff I didn’t actually pay attention to since I didn’t finish the previous season of that show.

Anything that I am 100% certain I’m going to cover gets a little crown, but that doesn’t mean I’ll stick with it past the next episode or two. Likewise, just because I’m not psyched about something doesn’t mean that I won’t pick it up. If you’ve got any input, flames, or desperate begging, go wild.

MONDAY

The Girl Who Leapt Through Space

The giant crazy harem AI and budget are just about the only things this show has going for it.

Natsume’s Book of Friends 2

Couldn’t even last through episode 3 of the first season, what did you really expect from me?

TUESDAY

Fighting Spirit: New Challenger

Naked men molesting each other in shower show.

Viper’s Creed

Most action packed show of the season… a shame it was so poorly written and entirely CG.

WEDNESDAY

A Certain Magical Index

 –insert joke about exposition here–

ToraDora!

*sigh* It’s going to kill me to see Ami get rejected, isn’t it?

THURSDAY

Black God

18 minutes of angst, 3 minutes of greatness. Invert that ratio, and it’ll be amazing.

The Tower of Druaga – The Sword of Uruk

Haven’t you been delisted from the stock market yet, Gonzo?

Tomorrow’s Yoichi

Certainly not the most creative or well made show ever, but it’s still very charming in its own simplistic way.

FRIDAY

Birdy the Mighty: DECODE2

Fool me one season, shame on you. Fool me two seasons, shame on me.

Tales of the Abyss

 Let the Clone Wars begin.

SATURDAY

Akikan!

Dear doofuses, アキカン is not how you write "empty can." Still, wordplay does not forgive sucking in every other aspect.

The Beast Player Erin

I didn’t even like Moribito much, and this is certainly no Moribito.

Chrome Shelled Regios

Generic, sure, but I certainly can’t fault them for having their priorities geared towards action over exposition.

Maria Watches Over Us

Contained more gay men and fewer hot lesbians than advertised.

White Album

Seven Arcs doesn’t really know drama and it shows. Burly men would have definitely made this much better.

SUNDAY

Absolutely Lovely Children

Who can resist BABEL’s Great Armada?

Casshern SINS

Now that the question of "who’s Casshern’s girlfriend" is settled, we can move on to his boyfriend.

Maria†Holic

Tone down the irritating beta-lesbian (which the 2nd ep did do) and could easily be a strong Shaft comedy.

Minami-ke: Welcome Back

Getting back to its roots and it feels great.

Ride Back

Dancing CG Robots. It’s as thrilling as it sounds.

Slayers EVOLUTION-R

Bringing back the classic villains and Naga? Fanservice to the extreme, but only if you’re already a Slayers fan.

Wrapup:

For the time being, my schedule is tentatively looking like:

Monday: Meh
Tuesday: Meh
JCStaffday: Index and Toradora
Thursday: Yoichi and maybe Black God
Friday: Tales of the Abyss
Saturday: Regios and raws willing, ZKC
Sunday: Minami, Slayers, ZKC, Casshern, and Maria†Holic are all potential

So, a pretty relaxing season all around except for Sunday… bloody Sunday. Since there’s not much I care about on Mondays, I’ll likely end up shuffling at least Slayers to then just to keep myself sane. It airs on Monday morning in Japan anyway. Casshern may also get shuffled back since apparently there won’t be anything better than the really LQ streamcast until Tuesdays. Overall though, it looks like a pretty decent season. I just wish everything wasn’t airing on freakin’ Sundays.

  • Hinano says:

Hm sounds a lot more packed that me! I’m only picking up Akikan, and Yoichi. I dont know how much of slayers I can take and Kurokami inflicts rage into me everytime I hear the dub on Imaginasian lol

  • Totali says:

    New shows are for chumps.

  • Hibiki says:

Your review for season 1 ep3 saves me from getting fooled in watching Birdy.

    No witty remark for Casshern?

    I suppose none is needed…

  • Aroduc says:

    Actually, just an oversight. ^^

  • chad001 says:

  • Shiro Long Tail says:

As much as I enjoy some good old Gonzo bashing I thought that Druaga was a good show. I also applaud their near simultaneous and streaming initiative.

I enjoyed CSR’s manga but I’m still waiting on a HQ sub to pop up =S
