ef ~ A Tale of OPs #11 — What? Only Four?

December 16th, 2008

Maybe next episode will be nothing but OPs.

Impressions:

How do you tell when the budget’s run out? When a show has 6 minutes worth of OPs, EDs and/or musical montages. SIX BLOODY MINUTES. Since I hate Mizuki’s attempt at singing, already listen to the instrumental version of the OP playing in the background for a quarter of the episode anyway, and really don’t care about the first season’s OP at the 12 minute mark, I think that means that I skipped nearly a quarter of the episode. Also add into that them using the budget friendly "words appear while people say them using the same sentence structure" routine for the fourth (fifth? nineteenth?) time this season and this episode was not… particularly visually interesting to watch. I’d have just closed my eyes and listened to it, but the dialogue was getting pretty cheesy as well.

Basically, Kuze decides to go hook up with Mizuki on the roof, she tells him all the ways she loves him, and then he happily collapses. Then they dump him in the hospital while all the characters from the first season talk about how Yuko helped them and how they want to help her too before playing the first season’s OP. Back to the hospital and Kuze’s operation. Blah blah prep and hand holding, before the ED plays, and then we come back to see Kuze flatline… and a montage of the entire show while Mizuki sings the song Yuko taught her in the past, and then Kuze’s heart starts beating again. Those were two minutes of needlessly nonsensical forced drama. A pity too, because I was hoping Kuze would die and take over Yuko’s job of harassing young couples.

So, yeah… even to the bitter end, Kuze’s arc is lame. At least there were things exploding on his face this week. If you squint, you can pretend that it’s his head blowing up.

  • […] I know what you’re thinking. “They didn’t have enough content for this episode, so they inserted an extra OP, ED, and a mont…” Well, I’ve got news for you, buddy. I love random OPs, EDs, and montages. That’s […]

I simply skipped straight to the Chihiro bits.

More circles are closed in this episode, in particular Mizuki’s answering all of Kuze’s questions from ep 7 and the last missing step of the Japan Otowa roof key’s journey mapped out at last. And of course, Kuze’s advise to Renji about dreams is given back to him by Mizuki. A bit disappointed that Yuuko’s song didn’t quite make it back to Kuze as well, but I suppose they wanted to save it to use as a summary of the whole show.

In fact, the whole episode felt more like a grand finale rather than the climax you tend to see in penultimate episodes, what with both OPs appearing and the first season’s characters giving thanks to Yuuko for her help in overcoming their problems.

I notice as well that in the lyrics written on Mizuki’s scrap of paper “memory” is the only word written in English. I suppose it’s to re-emphasize its importance to both seasons of ef?
